Anyone who met Bev Hiller was lucky. She was an amazing woman, mentor, artist, and teacher. She was my favourite teacher at St. Mary's H.S. She was kind, and truly invested in her students. She had a great sense of humour. She gave me support and advice when I needed it. She was a very special person and I will never forget her. I am so sad to know that the world has lost such a bright and wonderful spirit.

Ms. Hiller was truly one in a million. She had a unique way to make each one of her students feel special, and as if they were her favourite. Her flair, kindness and compassion left so many of us with the feeling of being accepted, heard and valued. She certainly helped to shape so many of our future paths. And for that I will be forever thankful. In many ways she was our fearless cheerleader, our motivator and guidance counsellor when other leaders didn’t show up. I always held sacred that she opened her door and allowed me to become a member of her “adopted family”. She was not only my teacher, she was such a good friend and confidant. The bond we shared was so special and I have always held that close to my heart. I’m glad we stayed in touch over the years and connected generally around the Christmas season. It certainly will feel different this year. Thank you Ms. Hiller for opening up your heart, your home, and for being uniquely you that we all adored. Sincerest condolences to her sister and family, friends and all those who cherished her. See you on the other side Ms. Hiller.

Bev was in my high school class at St Marys back in 1964. I remember her love for the Beatles, John Lennon was her favourite, while I had Paul McCartney hanging in my locker. I remember her mascara. How she loved makeup and she had some skills!
I remember how smart and witty she was, a rare example of how to be smart and still have fun.
One day when the teacher stepped out and did not return for quite a while, Bev stepped up to the chalk board and started writing a funny monologue. It was a jumble of current happenings, our lessons, and her observations just freely flowing. She was working on the second board when the teacher returned. It must have been March 15, because I remember a part that said 'Beware the ides of March'. She enlivened our classes and was a fine friend. I am sorry for your loss, Mary Lou. May her memory be a blessing to all who knew her.

Ms. Bev Hiller was my art teacher throughout high school at St. Mary's. Every day when I entered her classroom, it was truly a magical experience! Although, I was not the greatest student during my high school days, Ms. Hiller taught me that I could do anything if I put my mind to it. I learned so much about art history and now truly appreciate artist that are both current and past. Her exams were extremely tough - I would think back then, "How can I possibly remember the artist, the medium, the era and the year in which the artwork was made?" I studied more for her class than I ever did for any other classes.
Ms. Hiller knew my family as well - both of my sisters attended St. Mary's and my sister Pat went on to become a self-employed technical illustrator for various publishing companies. Pat was taught by Mary Lou Hiller.
Ms. Hiller would often ask how my mother and my sisters were doing when I was in her class and she always extended a hello to them.
As an adult, Ms. Hiller inspired me to return to school and study Computer Science and Digital Media. I had a bad instructor for one course who ignored my questions and pretended I was not in the room. I did pass his course; however, I was frustrated with his terrible teaching style and his curriculum. I set out to become self-employed and created a great computer studies curriculum. I approached a vice principal at St. Louis Adult Learning Centre and was asked by him to teach a programming course. I had to build my own curriculum and wrap my head around the programming which I was not at all familiar with. This course lead to me teaching for 4 years with St. Louis in both Kitchener-Waterloo and Cambridge schools. It offered other work opportunities to teach typing classes and basic communications skills as well.
I approached my students as Ms. Hiller had done with me in the past. I made learning fun and engaged all of my students while instilling in them that they can do anything if they put their minds to it.
I went on to become a Technical Writer, Illustrator and Graphic Designer where I worked for various engineering companies throughout the Waterloo Region and Mississauga.
My easel remains a fixture in my living room and I now have quality paint brushes, paints and technical pens. I am always inspired by something I consider beautiful and worth capturing.
Ms. Bev Hiller was a beautiful soul. I think about her often.
Mary Lou, my heart goes out to you as I know both you and Bev were inseparable. Please be well...I am thinking of you.

I Had Bev Hiller at St Mary's High School for Art from grades: 10-12. She was Such A Spectacular, Art Teacher and Very Kind Hearted with A Heart Of Gold. I was Totally, Honoured Each Day to Attend her Art Classes. I even, ran into her at Conestoga College and told me she Still had My Hanging Mobile with Rotating Art Work, which I made in her Grade 10 Art Class. My Thoughts and Condolences go out To all her Family and Friends. Bev will be Sadly Missed.

I was that awkward kid in Grade 9. 1976. Shorter than all the other girls. Rounder than all the other girls. Still wearing a training bra, lol. I was so afraid of being "noticed" in the bustling halls of St. Marys. But Miss Hiller managed to convince me to stand up in front of a crowd, dressed in white tights and wings, and play Puck in our class's performance of an excerpt from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. "Of course you must play Puck!" she exclaimed. And I did. Can still recite the lines. She took us to see the play in Stratford and I learned that I could love Shakespeare. She played us Rocky Racoon and I learned about ballads. And yes, her art classes (I took one every year of high school) were spaces of joy and learning and invention and investigation. She was the only teacher I spoke to personally about needing to leave school in Grade 13 because I'd learned I was pregnant. She was the only one I trusted not to judge me -- the only one I trusted to see "me" beyond my circumstances. I was in my 40's the last time I saw her. I found myself behind her in a checkout at Zellers. She knew exactly who I was right away. I was stunned to see that she still looked as young and beautiful as I'd remembered her being in 1980.
I grew up to become an English professor and I can say, unequivocally, that her joy for teaching and her ability to connect with her students as individuals remained a bar in my mind towards which I was always reaching. She was one of my models of personal and professional excellence. I feel so privileged to have known her and I can only imagine what her loss must mean to those who were closest to her. I am so very sorry for your loss.

So hard to lose a good friend! Bev was very special to all of us. She was kind, generous and so good to our daughters. Despite living with pain for many years, she maintained a wonderful sense of humor. We will miss her terribly but are so grateful for our time together and the impact she made on our lives.

Colm and I have such wonderful memories of Bev and Karol. We so enjoyed their company at many delicious meals at their home and at ours. Bev’s wonderful artistic talent was so evident in her home. Halloween, the house was decorated to the nines. Of course all the other holidays too, especially all the beautifully decorated Christmas trees. I loved the tall, skinny tree at the bottom of the stairs. The bunny dishes at Easter were outstanding. Thank you for your friendship and always the laughter and stories. Bev and Karol, you are together again in each other’s arms.
Love, Colm and Eleanor Kerr

Bob and I are so saddened. To me, Bev was like a older sister. I could talk to her about anything, and could count on sage advice, a kind word or a good laugh. I felt that she would always be there...just a phone call away. We intended to visit before Christmas. Who will I talk to about my memories of Karl, how big an impact he had on my life at the tender age of 13? I will miss her. Teresa xo

Bev was one of the good ones….a teacher who cared, and a very talented artist who could weave a tale about anything. She, along with MaryLou inspired me to pursue my artistic career and have many memories of her classes. Oh, how I would zip through my artwork, so I could experience the next lesson or technique she had in store for us. She was an inspiration. Rest in Peace Bev

Bev Hiller was my high school art teacher. She made a huge impression on me, and after all these years, I still feel a deep connection to her, and to her sister Mary Lou. Recently, I visited the Hiller sisters with a few classmates and we had such a wonderful time. We spent the afternoon talking about everything from art class to family pets, and at Bev's request I visited her once more, with my Therapy Dog Rudy. I cherish these visits and will remember them fondly forever. Rest well, and thank you for inspiring me to do my best work.

To Bev’s dear family and friends, my deepest condolences. She was indeed such a bright light…I will remember her forever. I had the privilege of being in Bev’s art classes during Grades 10-13 and I knew then and still feel today, that I was so lucky to get to see her every day during that time. She was thoughtful and caring, humorous and so passionate about teaching the principles of creating art and especially, about art history. Time spent in her classroom was a refuge, a place we could go anytime, where we knew we were accepted, loved and given an opportunity to develop our creativity. Gone too soon, she will be so very missed. I am grateful to have reconnected with her recently through cards and letters, and to have seen her in person a number of years ago. May she rest in peace with Karol.
