Obituary of Jakob Stumper

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Jake Stumper on October 17, 2023 at the age of 95, devoted husband of Henriette (neé Rita von Harpe), and beloved father of Karen. He is survived by two cousins in Germany.  Pre-deceased by his first wife Aloisia in 1996 and son Ralph in 2002.

Born in Gross Gaj in the former Yugoslavia to Konrad and Elisabeth Stumper on December 8, 1927, he escaped the onslaught of the advancing Soviet army during WWII.  His parents, sister and grandparents perished shortly thereafter.

Jake arrived in Halifax in 1952, found employment in window manufacturing – showing talent and integrity he eventually advanced to the position of plant superintendent.  In 1964 he entered Home and Apartment planning and construction management until his retirement in 1991.  He gained respect by all who had the opportunity of knowing him.

Jake loved vacationing at the cottage, where he spent many summers with family, loving the challenges of work in and around the property.  Throughout his life he also enjoyed listening to music, playing his button harmonica, choral singing, reading especially history and ballroom dancing.  He is a longtime member of Mount Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church and volunteered in various capacities there and beyond.  His passing leaves a great void.

A memorial service to celebrate Jake’s life will be held at Mount Zion Ev. Lutheran Church, 29 Westmount Rd. S., Waterloo, ON on Sat. October 21 at 2.00 pm.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Cardiac Fitness Association, Breslau through the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street S., Waterloo at www.erbgood.com
