Obituary of Maria Spirgatis

Maria passed away following a lengthy illness at Grand River Hospital, Kitchener on Tuesday, October 31, 2023 at the age of 85 with her family by her side.

Maria was the beloved mother of Tanja (Mark) Smithson and cherished Oma to Jacob. She was also a dear sister to Franz Frietsch in Germany.

Predeceased by her loving husband Werner (2013), brothers-in-law Kurt (Boerke) and Walter (Falk), niece and nephew Ralph (Boerke) and Angelika (Frietsch). She will be missed by many family and friends.

Maria was born in Germany and immigrated to Canada at the age of 21. Here she met her husband and enjoyed 50 years together before he was called home. She was a talented seamstress and a caring stay at home mom.

Special thanks goes out to the staff at Chartwell Terrace on the Square where she pleasantly enjoyed her final few months, as well as to all the amazing doctors and nurses at both Grand River and St. Mary’s hospitals.

Visitation will be held at the Erb and Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Tuesday, November 7, 2023 from 4 to 8 pm. The funeral service will be held at Trillium Lutheran Church, 22 Willow Street, Waterloo on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at 12:00 pm. A reception will follow the service in the hall at the church. Interment will follow the reception at Parkview Cemetery, 335 University Avenue, Waterloo.
