Obituary of Iris Rochelle Scharer

Iris was born in New York City and moved to Waterloo with her then husband and three children, Ilona, Niko and Margo in 1968.

There she raised her family, introducing them to the things she loved: music, books, theatre, art, good friends and social justice. She was a teacher-librarian, working in Kitchener-Waterloo, but also taught a few years in other places - Bearskin Lake, Virginia and Etobicoke. Iris was very creative – making quilted jackets, piecing quilts for her grandchildren, knitting, sewing, cooking and, many years ago, potting.

Iris was a vibrant personality and loved to focus on community – in her neighborhood and then later, at Luther Village. She loved to visit the library and believed everyone should have access to books and education. She always stood up for things that were important.

She enjoyed her last eighteen months at Luther Village – spending time with old and new friends, and especially appreciated the caring and attentive staff.

Iris passed peacefully, with her three daughters by her side. And in true Iris form, she kept her sense of humour until the end.

Iris often said that she wanted everyone to be loving, good and kind - and that is how we will remember her.
