I want to express my deepest condolences for your loss.
I would like to share a personal story that highlights the incredible compassion and humanity that Marshall brought to his work. Quite a few years ago my mother was homeless and struggling with addiction in Waterloo. During one of her most difficult times, he took the time to speak with her, listen to her story, and write an article that truly honored her dignity and strength.
Reading that article was a profound moment for me. It not only assured me that my mother was still alive but also allowed me to see her through the eyes of someone who genuinely cared and understood her value as a person. The kindness and empathy in his writing brought me immense comfort and hope during a very challenging period in my life.
I am deeply grateful to Marshall for the way he saw and portrayed my mother. His work had a significant impact on my life, and I will always remember him for the warmth and respect he showed her.
Please accept my heartfelt sympathies and know that his legacy of compassion continues to touch lives, including mine.
With sincere gratitude and condolences,
Brittany Berry

Marshall and I attended WLU at the same time back in the 90s. He was a TA in several of my fine art courses, that is where the friendship began. After graduating, I discovered we lived on the same street without knowing it. Years later, I found myself waiting in a room at the KW hospital. My wife had just delivered our son, but there were complications with the delivery. I was stuck in a small waiting area without knowing any information about the birth or my wife (they had whisked her away in a flurry of activity). I was panicked and left for hours. Through the open door I saw Marshall walk by. Seeing me, he turned and came in and sat with me. We talked for what seemed like forever, him telling me that his wife just gave birth to a baby girl.
Over the years, I always looked forward to jogging by the house and seeing/chatting with him.
I will never forget his kindness, and I will always remember him as so well loved by all. He was truly a people person, and I cannot say enough great things about him.

When I think of Marshall Ward I think of Thumbprints - Millennium Thumbprints, to be exact. In 1999 when I first met Marshall he was pursuing a dream that became the Millennium Thumbprints, a permanent installation at Kitchener City Hall. Teamed up with two other artists, he led the effort to mark the turning of the millennium with an ambitious proposal - to capture 1000 bronze thumbprints of Kitchener (formerly Berlin) citizens, as well as 1000 bronze thumbprints of citizens of Berlin Germany. It was a huge undertaking that involved leading members of the local German community as well. Through it all, Marshall was steadfast and calm, a pleasure to work with. In my capacity as Millennium Project Coordinator for the City of Kitchener we worked together in the background for over a year until the opening event that drew hundreds of people to the square. Through it all Marshall remained calm and steady. He was a remarkable soul. I have read all the touching tributes, Sylvia and my heart goes out to you and your dear daughters. I remember the close bond you shared and the strength of your love for one another. That was evident in 2000.
R.I.P Marshall Sincerely, Lorna Ferguson

I knew Marshall only as a writer. A writer who was kind to my family in the most difficult of times because he was never out to sell a story but only ever to tell a story. He was the voice of our community. He spoke without judgement or agenda. He spoke to remind us all regardless of our circumstance, of our humanity. He was a great big part of the soul of our city and the loss of him will forever change that landscape. RIP.

I am devastated by this news. I was just thinking about him last week and all the times, good and bad that we had. Glad I got to visit Marshall, Sylvia and the family back in 2014. Camping out for wrestling tkts in the freezing cold, my disbelief that the figure 4 leglock actually hurt (and Marshall then proved it did by applying it to me), sitting quietly in his rec room as teenagers both reading comics, knowing we would be in the same film class in september we pre-wrote our grand high school opus film "Being Green" during the summer, so many more wonderful memories. I am so sorry for yours and your family's loss Sylvia. I really wish I could be there to mourn with you.

I’m so terribly sorry to hear this. Marshall was one of a kind. We were best friends in high school. Unfortunately we lost touch over the years but his influence on my musical tastes and our shared love of 1980’s wrestling still endures.
Sylvia - I wish you and the kids peace in this time. Would love to get in contact and come visit when you’re ready.

I was a previous student of Marshall's Fine Art courses at Wilfrid Laurier University. He handled the class masterfully and had everyone's utmost respect due to the mutual respect and genuine interest he showed us. He was super inspiring both in his craft and as a teacher.
I have now had career as a post secondary teacher( teaching creative media) myself for over 10 years and I owe allot of my teaching style to the inspiration Marshal gave me. Truly a special person.
My condolences to his family.

Marshall looked after our condominium on Westmount with a gentle but firm hand. It suited him well as he could work on his art while working from home. We eventually all moved into new homes but I still had the pleasure of seeing some of his art exhibits and reading his column in the Waterloo chronicle. What a beautiful and kind soul but so full of dry wit. I will never forget his easy going nature or how delighted he was when his two daughters came into his life.
My prayers to Sylvia, Mason, and Sullivan. You are in my thoughts.

We were so lucky to know Marshall. As store owners in St Jacobs, we had many visits from Marshall when he came to town, mostly to get some hot sauce from Taste down the street. His playful sense of humor and stories of growing up in KW will be missed. Marshall and I taught at WLU as contract staff, so we had many a chat about the joys and sorrows of teaching. Of course Marshall liked to think he was the better teacher since he made it to the "wall of fame" and I didn't. So if you feel the need to see his smiling face again, check out the Bricker Building at WLU. One of my favorite stories to tell involves Marshall. Many years back Marshall invited me to attend his art show. To support him I went, even though I am a pretty straight forward science type and art shows aren't really in my wheelhouse. To my surprise, Marshall's show had mostly nudes, both male and female. Feeling a bit awkward, I decided to grab a drink and wander around briefly until I could snag Marshall, say hi and make a quick exit. So I found myself standing in front of this nude study of an older woman. A woman then came up beside me and asked if I liked the picture. Yes, I said it was very nice. She then let me know that she was the model...one of my most embarrassing moments ever!!! R.I.P. my friend.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Marshall was one of the first parents I met at KWBS, and we spent quite a lot of time chatting in the halls while we waited for the end-of-day school bell to ring, about everything from books and art, to electric cars, to religion and politics. He will be missed.

Dear Ward family:
Please accept my deepest condolences the stinging loss of such a dear and beloved man. I met Marshall in 2020 when I was interviewed by him and Sara G. on their incredible podcast. Immediately, I was struck by how intelligent and curious Marhsall was on such a wide range of topics. Second, I was impressed by how he radiated a down-to-earth nature and how he wanted to tell the stories of all those around him. He was a gifted storyteller and interviewer. I will always view the chance to meet with him as a gift that I received. You don't meet too many people in this life like Marshall. We sure will miss him. He can't be replaced, but he will be remembered.

Dear Sylvia, Mason and Sully,
On behalf of all of us LeDrews, I wanted to express how sorry we are for your loss and to offer you our most sincere condolences. Marshall was one of a kind, and I always enjoyed chatting with him, every time we ran into each other. He was the first parent to approach me and to welcome me personally at KWBS when we first moved here, and right there and then, a friendly and fun relationship was established. We only saw each other at school, or occasionally, when Max and Mason would get together somewhere, but it was always enjoyable when we did.
I had not seen him much since leaving KWBS and with COVID lockdowns, maybe once or twice briefly. But I ran into him just a few weeks ago at the grocery store, and it was as if we had last seen each other the day before. We chatted, just for a few minutes, as if no time has passed. As always, we talked about our respective kids, and as always, his pride in Mason and Sully was palpable. Being a dad to you two wonderful people was clearly the joy of his life.
I know that no words take away the pain and sorrow that you feel. But please know that we are thinking of you.
With sincere sympathy,
The LeDrews
