Obituary of George Ip
IP, George
Determinedly and proudly independent his entire almost 90 years of life, George grew up in a tumultuous China and established a colourful writing career in Hong Kong, where he intercepted a pianist en route to the nunnery. Together they started a family and eventually put their roots down in Vancouver BC, where they raised their children in the spirit of enterprise and independence. While continuing to write freelance, George tried his hand at many occupations and wound up running a cartage business that continues to operate today. George retired to Kitchener fifteen years ago to root for the Jays, tend to his garden, and spoil his grandchildren and their cat.
Friends and neighbours knew him as a socialite with a cheerful turn of humour, always as ready for intellectual discourse as he was for backyard gossip, binge watching The Weather Network or going for a swim. To his grandchildren he was equal parts respected elder, bearer of lucky money, and beloved friend.
His life was one of dodging and biting bullets. He knew how to roll with the punches and live for the moment, befriending those around him easily and genuinely. Though he surely will miss––and be missed by––all the people that were a part of his life, he undoubtedly will find more to make merry with in his next journeys.
