Obituary of Karen Doris MacPhee (née Smith)

Passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 23, 2023 at the age of 81.

Survived by her only daughter Lianne Brawn Chumley (Phillip), grandchildren William, Isabella “Izzy” and Emma, and her beloved Foxy Mae. Also survived by husband Daniel Cary MacPhee and his daughters Robin and Lisa. Remaining family includes uncle Stan Archer, cousins Joan Moran and Alan Cole.

Predeceased by her father Malcolm Forrest Smith and mother Doris Gladys Smith (née Archer).

In her younger years, Karen worked for her father Malcolm, to whom she was immensely close, at his Canadian Tire stores. Professionally, Karen went to Teacher's College in Toronto straight from high school and later earned her university degree while teaching and she and Lianne both graduated from university at the same time. She was a primary teacher and created amazing experiences for her students. Karen was a teacher to the end with her grandchildren, daughter and often gave a lesson to those who needed it. She retired early to care for her mother who was ill.

Karen was an avid animal lover. She raised and trained Dobermans and Manchesters, adopted many animals, and achieved significant wins in the dog world, particularly with her Higgins at Westminster. Wicca had a special spot in her heart, but most of all Foxy Mae was her best friend. Karen loved horses and riding and had many interests. She loved to do stained glass and quilting before her arthritis prevented her from doing so. She loved to read and travel. She had many, many trips with her daughter that will be cherished. Spending time at the cottage that she and Cary built in Haliburton, as well as time in Florida to avoid the cold weather were amongst the many things she enjoyed. True to her Toronto roots, Karen was a dedicated Maple Leafs and Blue Jays fan. Karen loved her grandchildren fiercely and cherished the time she spent with each of them. She was so looking forward to spending Christmas with her family this year.

Special thanks to Megan Campbell who was with Karen whenever needed to help with Foxy, go shopping, or simply visit, and who has helped our family tremendously over the last few days. As well, special thanks to Sheila for helping Mom transition peacefully. This brought great comfort to our family.

Cremation has taken place. Condolences for the family and donations to the Humane Society, a Wildlife Fund, or an Animal Rescue of your choice would be appreciated and may be arranged through www.erbgood.com.
