Obituary of John David Steele
John passed away peacefully at Freeport Hospital, Kitchener, on Sat. Dec. 30, 2023, in his 90th year. He is survived by Margaret Miller, his loving partner of 28 years, son David and daughters Lynda (Maury Weigel) and Jennifer (Dave Kidd) and granddaughter Stephanie Weigel. Also sadly missed by Margaret’s daughters Laurie (Rick Deacon), Karen (Michael Gale), Jenny (Bill Crawford) and Tracey (Glenn Harper) and by her grandchildren Brooke Deacon (Brent Verbiski), Karlee (Jake Patchett), Dallas, Hunter and great grandson Bo. He loved his family and was especially proud of all the grandchildren. Also survived by niece Susan Organ.
Predeceased by first wife Marlene, his parents Charles and Ida Steele, sister Polly Organ, her husband Jack and their daughter Joanna.
John spent his early years growing up in Southampton, and then attended school in Aurora, Waterloo and London, Ontario. Following his school days, John worked with his father at the family business, Hepworth Furniture in Southampton, until its closing in 1978. He then became a successful travelling salesman for several furniture manufactures until his retirement in 1989.
John was a proud Freemason and was admitted to life membership in St. Lawrence Lodge, No.131, Southampton in 1998 and completed 50 years of loyalty in 2008. After moving to Waterloo, John joined Waterloo Lodge, No.539, where he continued to serve for many more years. He loved woodworking and was a member of the Owls Nest Carving Club for many years.
During his years in Southampton, John served as Clerk of Session at the United Church. Once in Waterloo, he attended Trillium Church (St. John’s Lutheran) where he served on many committees.
The family would like to thank Dr. G. Pannozzo for many years of care, the Grand River Cancer Centre, Care Partners and the wonderful nurses at Freeport Hospital, Palliative Care Ward.
The family will receive friends at the Erb and Good Funeral Home, 171 King St. S. Waterloo, on Fri. Jan 5, 2024, from 10:00 am until time of service at 11:00 am. Reception will follow in the Fireside Room at the funeral home. Interment at a later date in Parkview Cemetery, Waterloo.
