John spent his early years growing up in Southampton, and then attended school in Aurora, Waterloo and London, Ontario.  Following his school days, John worked with his father at the family business, Hepworth Furniture in Southampton, until its closing in 1978.  He then became a successful travelling salesman for several furniture manufactures until his retirement in 1989.
