Obituary of Grace Marie McLachlan

It is with great sadness that Marie McLachlan (nee Oille), passed away peacefully at St. Mary’s General Hospital on her 90th birthday, December 18, 2023.

Survived by daughters-in-law Rachel Gore and Holly McLachlan, grandchildren Dawson, Ash, and Helen McLachlan, and niece Cathy Baer, and her family Ron, Carolyn and Angela.

Predeceased by her husband Dr. Donald Crapper-McLachlan (2016), and beloved sons Colin McLachlan (2004) and Cameron McLachlan (2018).

Born in St. Catharines, Marie moved to Toronto to attend university where she met her husband Donald McLachlan. As one of Canada’s prominent physician-scientists, Don was awarded an Order of Canada in 1990 for his contribution to research into neurodegenerative diseases and was instrumental in the founding of the Tanz Center located within the University of Toronto.

Together, Don and Marie traveled the world, and sailed the Great Lakes with their two sons. Marie was a devoted mother and was deeply saddened after losing her sons, Colin and Cam. She spent time with her grandchildren encouraging them in their life’s choices. Marie enjoyed eating out with her family, reading mystery novels and took great interest in politics and world events. She was a very elegant and refined lady and will be greatly missed by her family.

Special thanks to the staff at Waterloo Heights Seniors Apartments for being Marie’s second family these last 6 years.

Cremation has taken place, and a private family interment will be held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, condolences for the family and donations to the Tanz Centre for Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases at the University of Toronto, or a charity of one’s choice may be arranged through the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street S. Waterloo at www.erbgood.com
