January 8, 1928 – Dec 28, 2023
Pat Hamel passed away on Thursday December 28, 2023, at 95 years of age while residing in the Snyder’s Corner neighbourhood of the Parkwood Mennonite Home. She was a resident of Kitchener until she moved in with family in Waterloo after the death of her husband in 2012. She lived there with the support of the family and community for eight years as she struggled with the worsening symptoms of dementia. When additional services were required, she entered Long Term Care at Parkwood and resided in that home for 4 ½ years until her death.
She loved and was loved by her parents, Burton and Leah Swartz, her husband, life partner and soulmate Sonny (Lloyd) Hamel her children Randel (Nancy) Hamel and Terry (Bill) House, her grandchildren Brett (Katherine) House, Jaclyn (Ryan) Chambers and her great grandchildren Taylor, Lillyana, Lincoln, Emma, and Kate. She was predeceased by her sister June Gellatly.
There was nothing more important to Pat than her husband and family. She cherished the annual family cottage week in Southampton, camping trips with her husband, and numerous extended family dinners. She enjoyed playing tennis, swimming, reading, knitting, and going out to lunch with friends and sisters-in-law. She had a fine eye for jewelry, pottery, and the odd chocolate square.
Pat was a charter member of the True Friends Sunday School class at Calvary United Church in Kitchener since the early 1950’s where she met life-long friends and lived and shared her faith.
Pat worked as an administrative assistant at the Mutual Life Insurance Co., the Waterloo County School Board (WRDSB), the schools of Nursing at K-W Hospital (Grand River), St. Mary’s Hospital and Conestoga College Doon Campus.
The family would like to express their appreciation to all the Staff at Parkwood for their kind and dedicated care of Pat while she resided there. We would also like to thank Claire from Beechwood Home Attendant Care for her loving care, support and visiting while Pat was with the family and in community placements. We further acknowledge with gratitude the services of the City of Waterloo Adult Day Program, and the staff of the Home and Community Care Support Services for their assistance in sustaining a family placement.
