Obituary of Tim Thorne

Timothy (Tim) Thorne passed away suddenly on Thursday April 4th at Grand River Hospital after a valiant but short battle with cancer. Tim leaves behind his loving spouse Gerry Gowland, brother John Smith (Joanne), sister Patsy Spindler as well as many cherished family and friends.

Tim was born in London, Ontario on September 10th, 1954.  He achieved his Masters of Library and Information Science in 1989 and spent the bulk of his career serving the KW area.

Tim was very involved in his community leading Tai Chi programs and teaching music.  It has been said that practicing a Tai Chi set for Tim was the ‘embodiment of grace’.  Tim had an eclectic passion for and knowledge of all music genres and loved to tell stories and jokes, in fact he was known as ‘Dr. Glib’ in many of these music circles and his distinct laugh was truly infectious.

He was an accomplished musician (guitar, mandolin, banjo, and several other instruments) songwriter, and recording engineer. His most recent bands include Home County Line, the Blues Hounds, Failte, Rantin’ Rovers and Thorne’n the Sides.  Tim’s remarkable guitar-playing skills caught the attention of many fans and students.

Tim will be dearly missed, remembered for his intellect, passion for music, and ease in sharing himself with others.  His generosity and optimistic spirit touched the hearts of all who knew him.

Special thanks to the ER team at Grand River Hospital lead by Dr. K. Famzam for their compassionate care.
