Obituary of Roy Hinsperger

On May 14th, 2024 Roy Joseph Albert Hinsperger left this life peacefully on his own terms, surrounded by his family, at his residence in Waterloo. For the first time in Roy’s life, it was not a “crap shoot.” He “first realized he had a problem” in August of 2022 when he developed a debilitating illness that severely compromised his quality of life and what vision he had left.

Roy is survived by his beloved wife Shirley Hinsperger (ne McCullough), his children Mark (Carrie), Heather, son-in-law Mark Gladwish, and his grandchildren Hannah (21) and Matthew (18), as well as his nephews Greg and Brian Lloyd of BC. He was predeceased by his parents, Roy and Pearl (nee Renaud) and his sister Annette (Bob) Lloyd.

Roy will be remembered for his dedication to his work at the KW Woodworking and Craft Centre during his retirement years, and his 37 years as an electrical draftsman at the University of Waterloo. Roy liked to keep busy and over the years, he contributed to his community through service clubs like PROBUS club of Kitchener Cambridge, Lakeside Little Theatre (Mexico), KW Oktoberfest, Lakeshore Optimist Club, and the Ontario Marine Rescue Patrol, to name a few. Roy possessed many useful skills and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Whether he was busy fixing things around the house, doing his own home renovations, or helping out wherever he went, Roy’s generosity and kindness touched the lives of many.

Roy was blessed with several groups of loyal, long-time friends, including the “Rowdies”, his weekly meeting of friends at the Legion/OEP/The Duke, the breakfast group, the University of Waterloo Retirees, the wine club, old neighborhood friends, and his cherished companions from his various hobbies and interests. He lived a rich life, enjoying his passions for sailing, curling, golfing, camping, cottaging, woodworking, spending winters in Mexico, and traveling the world with Shirley. Roy’s presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, condolences and donations to the Sunnybrook Foundation or Kitchener Waterloo Woodworking and Craft Centre may be arranged at www.erbgood.com
