Obituary of James Eduard Riegert
James passed away at Freeport Hospital, Kitchener on Thursday, June 6, 2024, in his 60th year. He was predeceased by his father Eduard, and is greatly missed by his mother Ladona, sister Ann Kempel, brother-in-law Jeffrey Kempel and nieces Sophia and Emily.
James received his Honours B. Math degree at the University of Waterloo and went on to do graduate work at the University of Toronto. His education was interrupted by kidney failure, and after 4 years of dialysis, he received a kidney transplant. To fast-track himself into a software development career, he enrolled at Humber College and then spent over 15 years with Active Networks, creating software for memberships in national and provincial parks in the U.S. and Canada.
Fortunately, he was able to take a much-longed-for trip to Greece and later to Europe. Eventually, his health failed him again, and due to complications from diabetes, he had to take an early retirement and spent most of the time on his computer.
After a few years, he ended up in the Palliative Care Unit of Freeport Hospital for a few months before he died. The family is very grateful to the staff at Freeport for their excellent and compassionate care of him.
James was a very kind and grateful person and never quite lost his quirky sense of humour. His family will miss him so much.
James chose to donate his body to science as his way of helping others.
A Memorial Service will be held at Mount Zion Lutheran Church, 29 Westmount Rd. S, Waterloo, on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at 1:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Kidney Foundation would be much appreciated and can be arranged through Erb and Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S, Waterloo at 519-745-8445 or at www.erbgood.com.
