Obituary of Ray K. Sweezey
Passed away peacefully, at Hospice Waterloo Region on Wednesday, June 12, 2024 in his 91st year.
Born in Ottawa, Ontario, on December 18, 1933, Ray grew up in North Bay. He first got involved in music with his father playing upright bass and saxophone in clubs and bars. Ray's passion for music led him to a teaching career in high school music, obtaining his Bachelor of Music from Queen’s University in Kingston. He went on to teach at Southwood Secondary School in Cambridge and Cameron Heights Collegiate in Kitchener. As a lifelong learner he also studied jazz at Eastman School of Music and Mohawk College in Hamilton. Ray brought the love of music to all he met. He conducted community bands, always encouraging players to achieve their personal best. Ray played in many small local groups and loved sitting in on a jam session.
Special thanks to all the doctors, nurses, staff and volunteers at St. Mary's Hospital, the Cancer Center at Grand River Hospital and Hospice Waterloo Region.
Cremation has taken place. A private family interment will take place at Williamsburg cemetery. A private celebration for family and friends will be held at a later date.
