Obituary of William Lovell

William “Bill” Lovell

It is with great sadness that the family of William (Bill) Grant Lovell announces his passing. Bill passed away peacefully at his home with his loving family by his side on Tuesday, July 2nd, 2024, at the age of 79.

Bill is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Ellen Marie Lovell (nee Cunningham); his children, Michelle and Grant (Leigh); and his adored grandchildren, Aubrey, William, Rylan, Brian, Elleigh-Jane, and Waverley. He is also survived by his three sisters, Lorraine, Judy (Sam) McMechan, and Janet (Tom) Strom; his brother-in-law, William (Agnes) Cunningham; and his sister-in-law, Frances (Doug) Melnick. Bill will be sadly missed and always remembered by his many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

He is predeceased by his parents, Grant and Dorothy Lovell, and his brother-in-law, Robert Glidden.

Bill attended the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, and graduated in 1969. Soon after graduation, Bill started his teaching career in 1970 at Forest Heights in Kitchener, Ontario, where he spent the majority of his career. He became the History Department head in 1992 after taking a one-year department head position at Elmira DSS. He also did a two-year exchange and taught at Bluevale (Waterloo, ON) in the 80s. Bill retired from teaching in 1999 from the school where he started, surrounded by an amazing group of peers.

Bill was an avid lifelong golfer and a long-time member of Dundee Country Club, and more recently, Listowel and Golf North. He organized seasonal golf trips for many years to places such as Myrtle Beach and Santee. Some of the highlights of his golf career included playing at Pebble Beach, scoring a hole in one at Grey Silo, winning the Senior Championship at Dundee Country Club in 2002, and many other awards.

His career in teaching history transformed into a passion for genealogy in retirement. He traveled all around southern Ontario and even to England to meet, learn, and share family history.

After retirement, Bill and Ellen moved to Foxboro, where they quickly became part of the community. He was involved in the men’s league and enjoyed dinner parties with other residents. Bill always enjoyed cooking and preparing meals for others. They spent their retirement years traveling to many of their bucket-list destinations, including the opportunity to travel with their children and grandchildren for their 50th anniversary.

Bill was an incredibly proud grandfather and was regularly found in the audience at a dance competition, watching a wrestling match, or in the stands of a hockey game.
