Obituary of Dorothy Eileen Shantz
Passed away peacefully at Fairview Mennonite Home, Cambridge on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, age 94.
Beloved sister of Alice (nee Shantz) and her husband Fred Hornburg. Will be dearly missed by her sister-in-law Fern Shantz and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Predeceased by her parents Florence (nee Burkhart) and Mervin Shantz. Brothers Ralph (Marjorie), Robert (Carol), and Harold.
Never one to sit with an idle mind or hands, Dorothy was a hard worker and a help to many during her life. Some of her successes included working on the family farm, operating The Cookhouse at Kennisis Lake in Haliburton County, sharing her home and providing care to her mother, and volunteering at Fairview showcasing her many talents. Together with family and friends she created a full and happy life.
Dorothy enjoyed travelling and started at a young age by heading West with a friend, then continued later in life taking numerous bus trips to the United States with her sister Alice. She also enjoyed hearing about everyone else’s travels and was so happy to receive postcards from her nieces and nephews from the various places they had visited. She always wanted to hear your stories!
It was important to Dorothy to keep track of the growing family, and she was genuinely interested in others, where they were and what they were doing. She made sure to stay in touch with family and friends living at a distance, and old friends from her Haliburton days. There are many of us who have received a note or card in the mail after visiting or chatting on the phone with her.
Dorothy was known to have a sweet tooth and never turned down a good chocolate bar! She equally loved her Toronto Blue Jays, Jeopardy, Scrabble and a good book. Dorothy was an avid reader and finished a book as fast as you could hand her one. These many interests helped to keep her memory so sharp.
When Dorothy moved to Fairview she made it her home and was a devout Volunteer at Fairview for 20 years. Sharing her talents at the Fairview Christmas Sale, she prepared numerous jars of jams, jellies, pickled corn, and more. During her time she won three awards for her “Dedication & Service” as a Volunteer. One of the awards was for ‘Volunteer of the Year 2007’. The family truly appreciates the opportunities and care Dorothy was provided at Fairview, especially in her last few years.
The Love and Encouragement Dorothy gave to all of her family members over the years will never be forgotten. She was our biggest Cheerleader! She was a special person to so many and will be greatly missed.
