Passed away at Briarfield Gardens, Kitchener on September 1, 2024 after a difficult illness bravely borne.

Elisabeth, known affectionately as Liesel to family and friends, and as Liz to her Raytheon work colleagues, was born in Kaldauen, Germany on December 27, 1934, to Hein and Elisabeth Schmitz.

Liesel was the beloved wife of Gerhard, who predeceased her on December 21, 2015. She was also predeceased by her eldest son Reiner (Karen, 2020) in September 2021, and by her only sibling Artur in October 2022.

Loved and loving mother of Gerry (Susan), Ronald, and Edward (Leslee). Cherished Oma of Tyson (Katharine), Owen (Shannon), Elena, Nolan, Erika (Alex), Anthony (Tyra), Tristan, and Gregory. Proud Ur Oma of August, Yggdrasil, Willow, Wyatt, and Morgan; Sawyer and Vera; Eli and Miles; and Riah and Charlotte.

Liesel remained close to her cousins, especially Elisabeth (Peter) and family of Red Lake, Ontario. She had a wonderful relationship with Gerhard’s siblings, cousins, and their families, and treasured these connections. Fondly remembered by Lesley, Val, and the Klein family.

Her family gratefully acknowledges the loving care given to Elisabeth by the Wellness team and other staff at Briarfield Gardens: she considered Briarfield her home, and the staff to be her friends. More recently, the support of her Warm Embrace caregivers, as well as the Paramed PSW and Palliative Care teams was invaluable.

A special note of appreciation to her faithful card playing companion, her sister-in-law and friend Agathe Klingspon.

Liesel was a charming, positive “social butterfly” who delighted in friendships old and new; who felt blessed to be surrounded by the love of her family; and who looked back on her life with Gerhard, through good times and bad, with acceptance and contentment.

A Visitation will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S, Waterloo, on Thursday, September 12, 2024 from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm.
