Dear Frieda and family:
We remember our many years in campus ministry with Val at University of Waterloo. Val was such a positive influence on the lives of countless students, staff and faculty at UWaterloo and WLU. We also remember fondly Frieda's hospitality as you welcomed us into your home for gatherings. Val's giftedness lives on in the lives of your children as they continue to serve the community. He was proud of each of you.
You are in our thoughts.

Pastor Val was our interim pastor at Zion Philipsburg on two occasions. We loved him dearly and he loved us. Wise, quick witted and a great storyteller, Val was always up for a new idea and eager to carry it out. He enjoyed teasing a group of older ladies in our congregation, calling them his angels. One Christmas he played Pilate in our Christmas nativity video, dressing the part in a white robe, laurel wreath on his head, jingling gold coins (buttons) in anticipation of the upcoming census. He was made for ministry and we are all better for knowing this incredible man. God welcomes him home with outstretched arms. Well done good and faithful servant! From all your friends at Zion Philipsburg.

Val Henning (Pastor Extraordinaire)
Someone who has no doubt touched countless lives during his tenure, one of which is mine.
I was one of the (teenage) congregation when Val & Frieda were based in England, I became involved in the church through its youth club. I was a keen table tennis player, and the church had a table where I practiced with David Witteridge and Porky, mentioned in Dave & Julie’s condolence message.
My memories of Val are of kindness, compassion and sage advice (and of course Simon & Garfunkel being played a fair bit in their home).
Val made a lasting mark and he will always have a place in my heart – he was one of the good ones. May he rest in peace, with much love Graham Bassett

Our memories (Julie and David) of Val are enough to fill pages, and certainly fill our hearts and lives. As the English part of the Hennig family, he has been part of our lives for almost 70 years, since his early ministry in England. My dad (Ed) was his 'birthday twin', which he reminded us of when we visited with the family last August and September. Meeting my husband was a direct consequence of his school teaching at Brays Grove in England, and we have been married for 48 years with 3 children, who have all been a part of his family. Wouldn't have happened without him!
Over the years since, we have spent many happy times together, and those memories will always be special to us. My mum and dad (Terri and Ed) were close to Val and Frieda, and the miles across the seas never broke the bonds of the heart made when they were young parents together back in the 60's. The whole of our family sends our love at this time to all of Val's family.
Having published the sad news of Val's passing within our circles in the UK, we have received messages of sympathy from some of the past pupils from his teaching at Brays Grove in England, and we are charged to pass those on now. Especially from Graham Bassett, Alan and Claire Coggin, Steven Portnow (Porky) and Steve Szewc. This remains a testament to the lasting impression made all those years ago.
These thoughts are sent with love from Julie and David Witteridge.

How blessed all of those of us are, who knew Pastor Val. A kind and gentle man, with comforting words and a shoulder to lean on for anyone in need.
I am forever grateful to him for marrying me to the most wonderful woman I know. I cherish his friendship these last 40 years and will continue to enjoy his memory through the company of his wonderful family.
He had a great story about a woman who came to him wanting to have her name changed - if you knew Val socially, you probably know the tale and can still hear him laughing as he told the punchline!
I like to think that he now has the option to change his name, from Valentine to Angel.

I had the pleasure of working with Pastor Val at St. Peter's Church for a time, and his calm and compassionate manner was something I was always grateful for. His wisdom in the Church and God's Grace was a blessing and he will be missed by all who had the absolute pleasure of knowing him. My deepest condolences to his family; Please rest easy knowing that Val has received his heavenly reward and is in the presence of God.

Uncle Val had a lot of advice, quotes, and, of course, a lot of lessons that he taught at the pulpit and the dinner table. The best one I remember was: "Life is 25% systems and 75% relationships....maybe more" . He was right. If there was anyone who consistently pushed for relationship and understanding, he was the prime example. I think many of us would often think, "what would Uncle Val say" (and what would Auntie Frieda say too). He made all of our lives richer and he totally understood the true call to have relationships with each other and ultimately God. He was easy to approach, easy to listen and easy to love...he was a gift that I was honored among a lot of others to know. We miss him so terribly, but have the memories and moments, most of which are zany to treasure. Peace, comfort, love and even giggles to all of you. Thanks be to God.
