Obituary of Florence Marjory Hayes
Florence Marjory Hayes slipped away quietly on Monday September 30, 2024.
Florence was born on August 6 in Niagara Falls to Church and Hazel Swayze. She was the much-loved younger sister of James Swayze who pre-deceased her in 1988. On June 6,1953 she married Ewart “Bud” Hayes, who happily took the “Flo” out of Niagara Falls. Together they shared countless adventures, cruises, time in Florida and at their cottage for 68 years.
Florence attended Loretto Academy, Stamford Collegiate, and Niagara Falls Collegiate Institute, where her love of athletics began. Her basketball team held reunions for decades. After basketball, Florence enjoyed many different sports including badminton, tennis, curling, sailing and golf.
Once Florence arrived in Kitchener, she developed many strong, lifelong friendships. She became active with the Grand River Hospital Auxiliary where she happily worked in the gift shop. She was recognized for 50 years of service. She also spent two years contributing to the Hospital Foundation Board. Florence also enjoyed her time with the KW Symphony Volunteer Committee. She played an active role in the organization of many galas and other community fundraisers.
Florence did not work outside the home - but raising two energetic boys Allan (Elizabeth) and Geoffrey( Donna) was challenging enough.
She was so proud of her family - and when grandchildren came along; Natalie (Kyle), Jamie (Ashley), Christopher (Riley) and Laura, her joy knew no bounds. With the arrival of her great-grandchild, Mae Florence, one month ago, she was thrilled with her good fortune. Florence also leaves behind two beloved nieces.
Flo loved her time on Horse Island in Georgian Bay and was always up for a campfire, fireworks, or a rousing game of blackout bridge.
She always had time to read with her grandchildren or spend time with them down by the dock.
In recent years, one of her favourite pastimes was exploring the country roads of Waterloo Region. Having learned to drive at the age of 14, she was confident and capable behind the wheel until she was almost 94!
Flo was a strong, independent woman until a fall in her home caused her to break her ankle and lose the ability to walk. She then moved to a retirement home, followed by time spent at Hilltop Manor. The staff there always treated her with care and kindness.
A visitation will be held at Erb and Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St., S., Waterloo from 10:30 until 11:45 am on Monday October 7. Following visitation, the funeral service will be held in the chapel at 12:00 noon.
Donations may be made in Florence’s memory to Highland Baptist Church or Grand River Hospital Foundation and can be arranged through the funeral home at www.erbgood.com.
