So sorry to hear we lost Jim. I was so fortunate to have such a wonderful old school doctor for about the last twenty years. The selfish side of me was unhappy to hear of his retirement, but in hind-sight, I wish he had done it sooner to have more time to enjoy his love of golf we often discussed during visits. He always took the time to listen and thoroughly explain things and he was already sorely missed. A good man, and my heartfelt condolences to his family. Rest in peace.

I grew up on Watling Street in London, 2 doors from the Hicks family. Jim was 7 years older than me, so we didn't have much in common. Owing to the age difference, I never got to know him and his brother as well as his two youngest siblings, the girls. What I do recall of Jim was the times he babysat my sister and me. I think I was somewhere between 7 and 10 years old at the time. Jim found out that I, like so many children of war vets, was interested in history, and war movies. In order to amuse me, Jim created some very elaborate drawings of battle scenes. The details are vague, but I do remember there being many soldiers, tanks, and airplanes in the drawings. It was so many years ago, I don’t remember too much more about the drawings, but I remember how very much I enjoyed them. What might seem a simple thing to many, is a fond memory I have retained my entire life, the drawings are long gone (I wish I still had them) but the memory of how much I enjoyed them, is what remains. I’ve read many of the tributes on here, and it is clear that Jim had an ability to connect with all kinds of people, especially his patients. Maybe his making those drawings for me a long time ago when he was a teenager, was an early indication of that rare attribute. I extend my sincere condolences to all of his family.

We knew Jim in the Knollwood Park and Beck Collegiate school days. He was always fun and fair and smart. Playing baseball in the green space across the street, on the Beck tennis team, or just hanging out with the kids of Bellwood Park, Jim was a good friend and a happy part of our growing up in the 50's and 60's. Thanks for the wonderful memories, Jim. To all the Hicks family, we are saddened by Jim's loss but very grateful for knowing such a fine man.

Please accept my deepest sympathies on Dr. Hicks passing. He always had time for all of us and he never, ever rushed us. I could not have asked for a better doctor and when my husband was diagnosed with cancer, Dr. Hicks was always there for my whole family. We will miss him greatly.

To Dr. Hick's wife, children, and grandchildren, Ted and l were Dr. Hicks( to me), Jim (to Ted), patients for 30 years. Through our many visits Dr. Hicks was patient, well balanced, always willing to learn himself, and always with a sense of humour. We learned to trust his specialist referrals for us, since he always sent us to the best. l, particularly liked those visits in his office, where l saw pictures of his growing family, and then eventually the added ones of grandchildren. He was so proud of everyone! We were so saddened to hear of his sudden death - just after his retirement, and hope that these memory condolences will help you in your grief.

I was in the same classes with Jim at Beck. Of course, at that time, we had no idea what wonderful people some would grow to be, especially the quiet ones. Jim was definitely on of them. I lived in Waterloo for a long time and one night when one of my kids was sick, low and behold, a doctor made a house call (absolutely unheard of at the time). It was Jim Hicks. This would have been sometime around 1975. I am so sorry to hear of his passing.

Dr. Hicks was my doctor from the beginning of his practice. Over the years he also became a good friend and helped me through some very rough times (especially my son's death). I often used to tease him about his golf days and he would tell me of trips that you had taken and how proud he was of his children and grandchildren. I don't think that it is possible that I will ever meet another person that will care so much about others and I know he will be deeply missed by an awfull lot of people. When he left his practice I was so upset and when I heard he was so sick I was devestated and when I read of his passing I cried because I know I will never have another caring friend like him. I know in the future he will always be with you and at your side. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

My young family and I were among Dr.Jim's first patients, meeting with him for the first time in August of 1974. I did not realize then that he was very close to my age. Dr. Jim treated my family and I for several years in a kind and caring way. His diagnostic skills were excellent, however if there was ever the slightest opportunity that his patient could be better served, Dr. Jim did not hesitate to refer to a specialist, who usually confirmed Dr. Jim's original diagnosis. We had complete confidence in him. He and I loved to share fishing stories. I wish to extend my condolances to Dr. Jim's family and loved ones on the loss of a fine doctor, a fine man, and especially a fine human being. He helped my family and I in time of need Sincerely, Terry Kowalski, Brantford, Ont.

How sad I feel at learning of the passing of my great friend and family doctor, Jim Hicks. I had the good fortune of being accepted as a patient of Dr. Hicks in 1975. Over so many years he provided my family and I with quality health care. Always a friendly manner. Always a great sense of humour. Always compassionate. But most importantly Jim became a friend. What a wonderful listener and counsellor he was! I owe him so much and will never forget his kindness. May I offer my condolences to his cherished family.

It is with regret over the loss of a great guy and our sympathy to his family that we want to contribute to the Rotary International Fund. Through this hard time though, we only want to remember the quiet wit, tennis and golf prowess and dangerous abandon on the ski hill at Osler of one Jim Hicks. We are sincerely sorry for the loss of another good person on Blue Spruce court.

The members of my family were blessed to have Dr. Hicks as our family doctor for three decades. Many years ago we were in need of a family doctor and my internist, Dr. Jim Brow, wanting to ensure that I was in the care of someone very capable, recommended a "tennis buddy" of his. That was our lucky day! Dr. Jim Hicks was extremely compassionate, dedicated, and knowledgeable. Our heartfelt condolences to his family - he was incredibly proud of all of you.
