Laura Cunningham

Obituary of Laura Cunningham

Eleanor Lorraine Cunningham, known as "Laura," passed away peacefully in her sleep on Christmas Day. She was surrounded by loving family: her husband, George, daughters Beverley and Georgia, nephew John Deans and son-in-law Brent Lemanski. Laura is predeceased by her parents John James Deans and Rebecca (Gilmour) Morrison Deans of Londonderry, Northern Ireland, as well as her siblings, James, William (Billy) and Alison. She leaves one remaining sister, Brenda McPherson of Strathfoyle, Londonderry, N. Ireland. She is mourned by grandchildren: Jeffrey and Caroline Dutka, Julianne Costigan, and Rachel and Davy Deans, and their mother, Julia Deans. Laura will be remembered for her generous, loving nature and creative talent. She was a gifted pianist and Irish dancer who eschewed the ordinary and embraced the extraordinary experiences of life. In 1957, she represented Northern Ireland at Pinewood Studio's 21st Anniversary celebrations in London, England. She and her husband rescued their children from a devastating house fire in 1965 and shortly thereafter built a new life in Canada where Laura supported George in his contracting business, S.G. Cunningham Limited of Waterloo. Although unwell for many years, Laura lived for her children and grandchildren. She will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humour and compassion. The family thanks the dedicated staff of the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre (GRRCC) and especially Dr. Bonnie McCarron and nurse Jeanette for their kindness and care. The family held a private celebration of Laura's life on December 27th. Please direct any gifts in remembrance of Laura to the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre in support of their important work and this may be arranged through the Erb and Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, at www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.
