Obituary of Robert Richardson

Of Waterloo, passed away on Monday, February 13, 2012 at Columbia Forest Long-Term Care Centre, in his 86th year. Beloved husband of Shirley (Miller), loving father of Janet Ingram and the late, Terry Richardson. Survived by four grandchildren, Douglas Ingram, Teri Moore, Brad Richardson and Mark Richardson, a great granddaughter, Alexis Ingram, and a brother Jim Richardson. He was predeceased by his parents, Leila and Walter Richardson, his brother Terry who was killed in action in Caen, France in World War II, and his sister Marion. Bob Richardson was born and raised in North Toronto and attended Bedford Park Public School and Lawrence Park Collegiate. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy, (RCNVR), in World War II and following the termination of the war he attended the University of Toronto, graduating in Civil Engineering with a B.A.Sc. degree in 1949. He and Shirley were married in Bedford Park United Church in April, 1949. His main interests in Engineering were in municipal and transportation. He was employed by the City of Oshawa for a number of years in the Engineering Department and subsequently was appointed Com missioner of Planning and Development. When the Regional Municipality of Durham was formed in 1974, he was appointed Commissioner of Engineering and then Chief Administrative Officer for the Region. In 1980, he was appointed Chief Administrative Officer for the Regional Municipality of Waterloo and remained in that position until he retired in 1991. He was a member of the Municipal Engineers Association and the Ontario Municipal Administrators Association. He was active in a number of transportation associations and was a Past President of the Ontario Traffic Conference, served on the Council of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada for a number of years and was an Honorary Life Member of the Transportation Association of Canada. He held a number of positions with the Canadian Automobile Association, served as Chairman of the Board of CAA Toronto and was a founding member of the Board of CAA Insurance Company (Ontario). He was Chairman of the Board of the Canadian Automobile Association (National) and after moving to Waterloo was a member of the Board of CAA Midwestern Ontario. He was a member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario and the Canadian Society of Professional Engineers. He was a member of the Oshawa Rotary Club, the Rotary Club of Kitchener-Conestoga and the Probus Club of Kitchener-Conestoga. Bob was assisted and supported by his loving wife Shirley in all his endeavors. When living in Oshawa, they were actively involved in Northminster United Church and in Waterloo in Forest Hill United Church. Friends may call at Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street South, Waterloo on Thursday, February 16 from 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Friday, Febraury 17, 2012 in the Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 p.m. Following cremation, interment will be in a niche at St. Andrews - St. James Cemetery, 120 Coldwater Road West in Orillia.
