It is with a deep sense of loss and sadness when we learned of Winifred Shantz's passing. I, Joyce Munro first met Winnifred in March 1944 during World War 11 when Don McLaren took both of us to stay with friends of his - Dora and Ernest Peace at Cadishead, England. Don was stationed at a nearby Canadian base and Winifred worked there as a stenographer and yes they had tea together. Winifred had come from the south of England. I was a nurse in training at a hospital in Grimsby and had married Pilot Officer Norman F.Fitton A.C.A.F in January 1944. He had left for Canada at this time, having completed his first tour of duty, to see his parents who lived in Puslinch, Ontario. Dora was to look after us and keep other boys away, including her sons. Dora was good at looking after waifs and strays. Thus began a lifelong friendship for all of us. In June 1944 Norman's plane was shot down over France and he was killed. I returned to finish training as a nurse. After the war, Don returned to Canada. Winifred also went to Canada and obtained a job in Waterloo. In 1947 I came to Canada to see Norman's parents and of course to visit other friends who had come to Canada. I decided to stay in Canada and continue my nursing career - first in Sarnia , then Kingston - where I met Jack Munro, a veteran attending Queen's University. We were married January 1, 1949. Now with a small rented home, Winifred came to visit us. Our daughter Heather was born in September 1949. In 1950 I returned to England, to see my parents, where my son Bruce was born in Grimsby. In 1951 Winifred returned to England, at her grandfather's request, where she could purchase some fine china to take back to Canada. While there Winifred came to the Peace's and with them escorted me to Liverpool to board the Empress of Canada, for my return home, Winifred carrying my son Bruce. We had many wonderful times together, including the times the Peace's came to Canada and stayed with us in Kingston and when we visited each other over the years. We followed Winifred's activities with Clay and Glass Gallery. We say safe journey home. Love and God Bless. Joyce M.Munro

Gina's has not been the same without Mrs Shantz's booming laugh. We think of her often and will remember her forever.

For over 35 years Gina's had the privilage of taking care of Winifred Shantz as a client. She shared her her fascinating life experiences, was a progressive thinker, elegant and fashionable, beautiful till the end and has truly influenced and inspired all of us at Gina's. She is sadly missed.
