For people interested in the genealogy of the Chivers family, and of Alf's English ancestry in particular, I can provide some insight in to what might be considered as my unusual relationship with Alf as his 1st cousin once removed.
Alf's father, William, had at least two siblings living in England - Martha Chivers Dimmock and John 'Jack' Chivers. Martha was my maternal grandmother and my mother, Esther, who was one of Alf's 1st cousins, married Roland Barnsley. However, after my mother's death, my father married another of Alf's 1st cousins, Kath Chivers, who was one of three daughters of Louise and 'Jack' Chivers of which only one, Edie, is still alive as well as John, the youngest of two brothers.
My mother's sister, Kitty Dimmock, went to live in America as a young teenager around 1930, and met and married Dick Wallace. There, they raised three children - Joan (Howells), Katie (Johnson) and Dick Jr, all of whom are living in Ohio in the Columbus area.
Over the decades, we have enjoyed several visits to England from various cousins from Canada and the U.S.A. and we had a wonderful holiday over there with them all in 2004.
Alf was a much-loved member of the family and will be greatly missed, but his love of life and positive attitude means that we shall continue to celebrate his life as much as mourn his passing.
Sylvia Smith (nee Barnsley)

Alf was a lovely man and such a positive person. He loved all things English, especially the churches and the pubs, and he and Ted developed a high level of expertise in beer tasting during their last visit to the UK! So glad we were able to see him during our visit to Canada in 2004. We shall remember him fondly and he will be sadly missed. We send our love and sympathy to Ted and Mary. God bless.

My brother Richard, sister Kathleen and I (Joan) are the three children of Alfreds cousin, Kathleen Dimmock Wallace. Kathleen was the neice of Alfred's father, William Chivers. We were all very fond of Alf and Isabelle. We visited them and their family in Canada and they also came to Ohio to visit us. Alf's brother Bill was in Ohio several times while he was in the service! Alf was an excellent photographer and he always documented his trips and shared his wonderful photos. On one trip he spent a good deal of time helping my son Craig spruce up his photo skills. Alf and Isabel Chivers were wonderful people and we send our condolences to their children and extended family. Please keep in touch with us and we hope to cross paths again. Love and Blessings, Joan, Dick and Katie!

I'll miss you Uncle Alf. Even though I didn't visit you much over the past years, you were always the Uncle who reminded me the most of my Dad - such an earnest man full of the joy of life. All my love to Mary and Ted.
