Though the months slip by all too quickly there is a sense in which it has been a long year and I assume more particularly for you Gail and the family. You're not forgotten nor of course John himself. The old Sarnia Northern group has thinned out greatly in the last few years and the loss is hard to think of. With care, love and prayerful remembrance; Stu Thompson

After graduating from UW in 2000, John was ever so gracious to offer me a job at the Watcard office during my year off before my graduate studies. I had wonderful time learning from him and formed many great and lasting university friendships during my time there. John was a man with a talent for cooking and entertaining, who had a big heart and always wore a big smile on his face. My condolences to Gail and family. Rest in peace JC.

Gail and family; It was shocking to receive the news regarding your loss of John. I only met you the one time Gail, last fall at the 'Woodcock' reunion at Ross's. Of course with John the memories go back to the days of knocking around in the halls of Northern Collegiate and from there to Waterloo and anywhere between. Back in the days of our youth when most of us were flitting about John was the one who was working somewhere and the one who had his own car in hi school. He was a guy you could depend on. So glad to have seen you both in September, but so sorry for your sudden loss of the fine fellow that we simply called 'Cunningham'. With love and prayerful remembrance of you all at this time of deep sorrow; Stu Thompson

Gail, I am so sorry & shocked with the news of the loss of John.I met him in 1973 when I was his brother Bob's wife to be.I must say,I was awestruck. He was this short guy who stood so tall & seemed small but wore a size xlarge in character, laughed & kidded with me to make me feel comfortable always. He offered advice on freezing foods, cooking & how to know a good bottle of wine.He was always so good to all of us - his family & that's what I shall always remember most. My prayers are with you.

John and I worked closely together over the years that I have been at the Universtiy of Waterloo, and I will miss him - his guidance and advice, but mostly, I will miss his fantastic sense of humour. He was always firing up my interest and we would often place a bet on the outcome of one thing or another...and most often he would win! My heart is saddened by his early departure from this world...and my thoughts and prayers are with you Gail, and the whole Cunningham family. God Bless.

John started his University of Waterloo career in food services where many of us got to know, appreciate and respect him. After the WatCard office became a 'standalone' enterprise, we worked together to deliver exceptional service to students, staff, faculty & visitors. John's standard was to provide nothing less than excellent service. He took the time to get to know our staff personally and constantly had a story or a joke to share. John will be greatly missed by everyone in our department.

John was a big part of my university life/co-op job, teaching me a lot about business, connections, and life. He gave me the best advice that I still think of every time I host a dinner party: do as much prep/cooking as you can before the guests arrive so that you can spend your time with your guests instead of in the kitchen. John was a great boss and mentor, always bringing humour and generosity to his work. He will be missed.

John Ratz posted a condolence
Sunday, April 22, 2012
I met John thru my brother, Paul, when I was a student living part time at Paul's house in 1983. John's first comment was, "so this is the mysterious brother!" Needless to say we instantly hit it off. John was indeed a fantastic cook and no matter how many times I saw him make a Caeser salad dressing, no one came close. Before I met John, Paul brought some leftover chili from an event back and it was the best I had ever tasted. I asked Paul if I could get the recipe. John personally sent a copy and some advice. This was the start of my love of the culinary arts. That WAS Johnny. He cared for people and there was absolutely NO BS in him. He wasn't afraid to speak his mind and yet he was never rude or crass. Johnny was the glue that kept me connected to people that I love and unfortunately don't see as often as I would like. To say that I will miss him is an understatement. Gail, John loved, admired and respected you. Coming from John Cunningham, that is the greatest tribute to anyone.

John was a truly genuine person. Every memory of our good times with him is filled with laughter, great conversation, delicious food and good wine. Jack and Alex enjoyed when "Uncle Johnny" came to visit. He always treated them like grown ups. I enjoyed his visits for his caeser salad but mostly for his laugh and great stories. He was always smiling and didn't "sweat the small stuff". John you will be missed so very much. Gail, although your life with him was only just beginning, I hope you take comfort in knowing how happy you made John and how much he enjoyed your travels together. Our thoughts and prayers our with you. Cindy Ratz
