Al was my classmate, and beloved by us all. A great calm, smiling presence, keeping everything in perspective. I remember him recounting how on a MIssion FIeld (we don't have those any more!) he was asked where the Doxology should go in the service. What's the Doxology?, he asked, in all innocence. I used to meet up with Al again at occasional class reunion (l953!). He was always the same welcoming, open, quietly charming person. Out of the best heart of the United Church! We miss him, and bless his memory.Bruce McLeod

On behalf of Hamilton Conference, I send my most sincere condolances to all who knew and loved Alvin. The United Church of Canada is richer for having been lead by his ministry. May you sense God's healing and comforting presence in this your time of grief.

Dear Friends and Family; Back in the late 60`s mid-70`s, I ahd the honour and delight to be both mentored by, and a college of Al. In everyone`s lifetime there are those moments that stand out from all the rest. Two of my TOP TEN, stories that I have repeated many times, involve dear Al.I remember being a young ,radical PhD grad student in a 'sensitivity group', led by Al.He was silent for a long period of time as the group found their way with one another. After a while I challenged Al quite loudly..."who are you anyways and what gives you the right to sit there in silence and pretend to be the leader!!!" Al replied calmly.."my name is AL Evans". I got my Doctorate and was working at the couselling centre at U of W. Again, I challenged the leadership there.of the senior staff. I came out of a meeting and Al actually pulled me by the ear into an office...sat me down and said..."you are probably right about everything you said to those people...but, young man, you need to learn to say it with more compassion and understanding...fierce compassion is O.K..not your self righteous indignation! AGAIN I WAS HUMBLED BY THIS AMAZING MAN. My he rest in Peace Much love to you all Joe Goodman
