I was grateful to Myrta Rivera for choosing St. Mary's General Hospital to do her chaplaincy. She spread sweet love with caring acts of kindness. She went about her work with thoughtfulness, grace and wisdom. People say that a job well done is its own reward, but still, her family and friends should know how much her work meant to those around her. It was a privilege to be working with her. I appreciated her staff support, guidance and partnership in chaplaincy ministry. The way she radiated God's love was something very special. Myrta, thank you for doing an awesome ministry.

We are saddened by the passing of our dear friend Myrta, although we are so very happy to have known her. During this difficult time, while we reflect on how much a loss this is for the entire KW community (and beyond), we close our eyes and remember Myrta and how much she meant to us. And, we smile. Her laugh, her compassion, her energy, her teaching will be with us always.
Our love and support to all of Myrta's family and friends. We will miss her so.

When I was in the 1st year of my Master of Social Work degree at Wilfrid Laurier University (several years ago), I started connecting with the KW multicultural center(KWMC). I eventually took the multicultural studies certificate offered by Wilfrid Laurier and the KWMC. It was Myrta's gentle way of acknowledging the need for more in-depth education and training in the areas of diversity and anti-oppression-then doing something about it. I would send Myrta emails about my thoughts on what we had talked about and she was always provocative and inspiring. She always asked more of me than I did of myself and gave me more recognition than I would ever give myself. She helped me to develop the capacity to expand to the demands of what is required-in work, in school, in life. She was always reflective and requested-never demanded, that we look inward, refrain from being quick to judge, and be open in both heart and mind. To learn true humility from someone you think is a real-life superhero is an extraordinarily powerful experience, an experience I owe to Myrta. Myrta hired me on at KWMC during my MSW. I learned more in those months than my entire Masters. We took on a few projects together that were born out of kind conversations, where compassion turned into action. Myrta wrote my reference letter for my first job after I finished my MSW. I will always be in her debt. I bet there are hundreds if not thousands that could say very similar things about her. This world is at a loss without her, but better off because of Myrta Rivera. May we all influence someone as I was influenced by her.

When I think of Myrta I think of the scallop necklace that she wore (from the camino de santiago) and what it represented. She had a huge heart and an amazing calm presence.

I was so shocked to hear of her passing. She was my mentor, an enabler, a visionary. She had a great sense or humour, always making me laugh. She rocked and I am definetely blessed to had worked with her. I have such wonderful memories of your Mother. I remember listening to a presentation she gave for United Way. In her wisdom she said that she must have known that she would work for an agency that could not afford a computer programmer, so she gave birth to one.
