Obituary of Florence Metcalfe

"Death is part of life." On September 22, 2012, just five weeks away from her 102nd birthday, Florence died quietly at her home in Toronto, with her son at her side. Florence was the last surviving member of the first Brownie pack in Canada, formed in 1918 in Hanover, Ontario, where she was born. She outlived all of her three brothers, Art, George and Wes, and their wives. Her beloved husband, Rev. Morley Metcalfe, predeceased her in 1984. Left behind now, but sustained by memories, are her daughter Jean (Brian Kirkham), her son Bob Metcalfe and his partner Raymond Siguenza, seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Florence was an academic, teacher, leader, gardener, consummate baker of buns and pies, social activist, dramatist, camper, athlete, quilter, crokinole player par excellence, lover of music and theatre, and an optimist. Even though dementia claimed so much of her memory, she still enjoyed life. Friends and family will be received on Saturday, September 29, 2012 from 2 - 2:45 p.m. at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo. A memorial service will follow in the Funeral Home Chapel at 3 p.m., Saturday, with Rev. Jack Paleczny officiating. A reception will immediately follow the service in the funeral home's Fireside Reception Room. A burial service in Hanover for family and friends will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Amnesty International or the Mission and Service Fund of Trinity United Church, Kitchener. Donations may be arranged by contacting the funeral home at www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445. "Miss me but let me go." She was loved.
