It's very saddening to know that Professor Parvathi Basrur is no more with us in this world. I was very fortunate to have the professional guidance and blessing from Professor Parvathi Basrur during the planning phase of my Doctoral research in Canada. I and my family members are eternally grateful to Professor Parvathi Basrur, who was not just a kind-hearted person, but an extraordinary human being. We have no words to express how much she means to me and my family, and we are deeply saddened that we will never be able to hear Professor Parvathi Basrur anymore.

I first met Dr.Parvathi K. Basrur in literature, when she in 1963 together with her husband published a description of a simplified and non-expensive technique how to reveal chromosomes of primary fibroblast cultures. At that time, after the introduction of new techniques in human cytogenetics, many young people started investigations in animals, but since they often had poor economical resources, a simple and non-expensive technique for culturing solid tissues was very appreciated. At least it was important for me at that time.
During the next 40 years I had on many occasions the opportunity to see Pari as a colleague in different parts of the world. She was a warm, positive, and intelligent person and became an important pioneer of animal cytogenetics. In discussions I never heard her using hard words to colleagues or people in general. When I visited her laboratory, it was always nice to experience the relaxed atmosphere and the devotion her staff demonstrated to her. After discussions - during my active years at the university - with students about cytogenetical problems treated in her publications, I always mentioned with pride that Dr.Parvathi Basrur was a colleague and a close friend of mine.
Dear Pari, I am very happy that we have been colleagues and friends during our common years of work in the cytogenetic field.

Losing Our Etchi is one of the most difficult things we have gone through. As I am standing up here today, I realize how fortunate I was to have her as my Etchi. There are not words to express her influence in my life. It is through her example that I learned to be the mother and wife that I am today. She loved our family and was deeply devoted to my mother and Family. She showed strength and love right up until her last days with us. Let's share our memories, as her Spirit continues to live in all of us.

Dear family Basrur, please accept our heartfelt sympathy and condolences.
The passing of Dr. Pari Basrur, an internationally known cytogenetist, saddens us all, who remember her as a gracious and congenial colleague.
Her influence in related aspects of chromosomal structure and genetics is well recognized. She will also be greatly missed by younger scientists, to whom she extended particular interest and help. Animal cytogenetics is a very broad field covering most species, sometimes including also men. Establishing effective standards in chromosome banding f.e. demand active involvement and extensive experience. Such was the case with Dr. Basrur and her coworkers. The influence she exerted in her field stemmed, in part, from the impassioned participation she brought to all scientific discussions. Those of us who were privileged to know her will miss her very much ; she will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Pari was my second mother. I will miss her. She was an outstanding human being, the most genuine and sincere person I have ever encountered. Every conversation with her was a privilege, yet this incredibly talented, gifted lady constantly questioned whether she was worthy of the honours bestowed on her - always concerned that she might be imposing. Decisive and firm as she could occasionally be when necessary, she was to most of us simply a gentle, deeply caring, and humble person. We have all been enriched by having had the opportunity to know her. If how you touch others is the true measure of a person, then Pari stands foremost among those I have had the good fortune to meet on my journey. Sincerest condolences to the family.

I remember the first time I met Dr. Basrur, I felt intimidated and was not sure what to think. But over the 6 year that I spent at Guelph, I came to admire her very much. She was always supporting, especially when I became a mother. She was a terrific role model, being an accomplished scientist, mother and wife. But most of all, she was a great mentor, always ready to help or give advice. As I told her, she was my scientific mom.
Among many things she taught me, was how to look. I vividly remember showing her a picture of something exciting, I forget what it was, but I never forget Dr. Basrur immediately zooming in on a thread that somehow had made its way into the picture. I had not even seen it. That's when I started to appreciate the wonderful optics of a microscope without dust. I am sure Dr. Basrur would smile if she could hear me now berating people for not covering the microscope.
It is hard to imagine I will not get to see her again, but the influence she has had on me will stay forever.

As a veterinary student at Guelph in the 1980's, I had the fortunate experience of being one of Pari's students. I became quite close to her, and was often invitied to share many dinners at the Basrur residence. After graduation, and for the last 20 years, we managed to stay in touch. I was always grateful for her warmth and generosity, and felt truly bleessed to have her as a friend. My condolences to the family, she will be truly missed.

Dr. Basrur had a significant influence on my life. My mother and I will always be grateful for how she took me under her wing 37 years ago when I needed help with research as a teenager, expecting only that I "pass it on" for compensation. She impacted my career direction. She provided enrichment not only scientifically, but on a personal level. For some years I corresponded by mail with her father in India (which was quite special for a young woman from a small Ontario town). It was an honour to visit with her in more recent years. She was a gracious lady and a great role model who will continue to be fondly remembered and loved.

We will be always missing Dr. Pari Basrur, one of the most kind and bright women that we have met and got the opportunity to spend unforgettable times with; and having so enjoyable conversations together. I knew Dr. Pari Basrur back in 1988 at the very first time, since then I still think about her as one of the most generous and lovely persons that I have ever known. Our deepest condolences to Dr. Pari´s family, we want to let them know that we will cherish all those memories about her in our hearts.

My heart is deeply saddened to hear of Pari's passing. Living a life of compassion, Pari exemplified the very best of what it can mean to be human, what a human being can be and do in this world. She touched innumerable lives, near and far, through her kind and generous spirit.
Pari, you were, and will remain, my friend and inspiration. May your memory live on in all of us, guiding our footsteps. In this way, you will always be with us. You are loved, Pari. Thank you for all you have been and done. You have left the world a better place.

I will be grateful to her for rest of my life. Before I met her I had a enourmous admiration for scientist she was. During my time in Guelph I had the honour of meeting the brilliant scientist in person. Talking to her I could see how wisdom, sweet and kind person she was.Even more, every time I had opportunity to talk to her I felt a kind of maternal confortating feeling which is so important to us, international students. We will miss you so much.

Dr Parvathi Basrur was a dear friend and motherly to me. She was an inspiring role model and I learned a lot from her especially during beginning of my life in Guelph, when I was trying to get an opportunity for higher studies after completing Vet Medicine in Kerala. She was a beloved mentor for me even if it was for a short time and our relation continued even after I left Guelph after my studies. I have wonderful memories of time spent with her: the fascinating conversations on a variety of subjects, our leisurely and delicious lunches. I was fascinated by her generosity. She was special indeed, and my family is privileged to know her. I was very much happy to see her email in my inbox a few months ago to know how we were doing as I hadn’t touch based with her for some time, as I was going through new phase of my life with our first child. I am sad that I didn’t get a chance to meet up with her as I had promised to introduce our child to her. Deeply saddened to hear of her passing away. Such a kind and gentle soul she was, and will be dearly missed. Our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Vasanth Basrur and Jyothi and family. May her soul rest in peace.
