Obituary of Joyce Stormont

After an un-expected and courageous battle with cancer, Joyce Evelyn Stormont, of Waterloo, passed away peacefully at Freeport Hospital in Kitchener on February 22, 2013 with the grace and dignity with which she lived her life. Joyce will always be greatly loved and sadly missed by her husband George, her life partner for over 60 years. Loving mother of Beth, Jim and Janice and her husband Nigel Purvis; special grandmother to Evan, Miles and Sean Purvis of whom she was very proud. She will be greatly missed by her close friends and neighbours both in Waterloo and Brussels, Ontario. Joyce graduated from the Wellesley Hospital in Toronto, Class of 1950 and remained dedicated to her profession throughout her life. Throughout her nursing career, Joyce maintained long lasting friendships with her fellow graduating class of nurses, the "Nifty Fifties". Those friendships lasted a life time. During her career she worked at St Mary's Hospital, the Victorian Order of Nurses, and the Doon Campus of Conestoga College. After early retirement, she volunteered for many years with organizations committed to health education of seniors in the Region of Waterloo. She was a charter member of the Women's Probus Club of Kitchener-Westmount. With her husband, she enjoyed many quiet times at their farm, "Glenogil" where she could read, do crossword puzzles (in ink) or just sit and watch the birds, the deer and the sky. Joyce had a quiet strength and believed in her family. She always made us feel special and that is because she truly believed that we were. Joyce is pre-deceased by her parents, Edith (Moore) & Bruce Belford, stepmother Gladys, sister-in-law Magdalene Horne and her husband Arthur; close relatives Evelyn & Scott Ferguson, May & Don McCrea, Mary & Gordon Moore. The family wishes to give their heartfelt appreciation and thanks to all of mom and dad's good friends and neighbours in Waterloo for their continuous, unwavering support which was a tremendous help during the difficult times. We would also like to thank the staff of all the care giving agencies that provided mom with a warm circle of care these past few months. At Joyce's request, cremation has taken place. Relatives and friends are invited to share memories of Joyce during visitation at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Thursday, February 28, 2013 from 7-9 p.m. A celebration of Joyce's life will be held in the Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, March 1, 2013 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Victorian Order of Nurses or the United Way of Kitchener-Waterloo and Area would be much appreciated.
