Summers and Oktoberfests were special times because that meant we got to visit with our Straus cousins and extended family, which, of course, included Pete. Summers meant going to visit at rented cottages in Port Elgin and endless euchre games and plenty of laughter to jokes I really didn't get because I was too young to understand them! But it was a fun atmosphere all the same! Oktoberfests meant seemingly endless car trips to KW~endless because my Dad, Leo, always got lost! One memorable Oktoberfest (perhaps the last one), I remember Pete wearing his hat with the impossibly long feather in it, and I wondered how he was going to fit into the car with it. Mom recounted how Pete had his head (and hat!) out the window at one point, waving and shouting to other people in their cars. I couldn't believe that this quiet, mild-mannered man could be so...well, crazy! Thinking back, Pete was always at the heart of all the laughter, whether it was at the cottage or at Oktoberfest gatherings. He has had a hard road to travel in the last few years, as has Rita. But they have always had their sense of humour, which is a valuable life lesson. God Bless you Pete.
