My deepest sympathies to all Robin's family and friends. I remember him with both respect and fondness from my years at the University of Waterloo (1981-90). Robin was Dean of Arts when, shortly after my arrival at Waterloo, as a lecturer fresh out of grad school, I became acting head of my small and conflict-riddled academic department! Robin took me under his wing, offering advice, suggesting strategies, calming emotions, and always providing encouragement and support. He was instrumental in allowing me to weather the storms, and to become an effective instructor and administrator. He was a model of enlightened management—and a warm and generous human being. I will always remember his smile—and his slightly sardonic chuckle.

When I was a student, Dr. Banks' door was always open to us. His wisdom and patience were an example of the kind of person I wanted to be. People like him were the reason I attended UW and why I returned to work there in 1981.
Since his retirement, I have seen him at various events and though we did not know each other, he always greeted me and everyone with his smile. He will be missed but certainly not forgotten by all those who had the honour of knowing him.

I worked with Robin for much of my career at the University of Waterloo. His gentle and yet personal touch made him a success and a model to be emulated. I will miss his felicity, but will remember the great man that he was.

Kathy, Greg, Robert and Grace - we were so sorry to hear your sad news. We only knew Mr. Banks from a quick wave and hello across the lawn but the wonderful obituary provided an appreciation of his life and the Dad and Grandpa that he was. Robin was my mother's cousin (Dorothy Mary Banks daughter of Bob & Dorothy). I had the pleasure of meeting Robin many years ago when I visited Stratford and it was just like meeting great uncle George, he was the same gentle character and generous with hospitality. I got to know Robin while at U of W in 1986/87. As the President of the Arts Student Union while he was Dean, our relationship was generally one of a professional student/administrative nature. But it also got to be a bit more personal, as I too was diagnosed with skin cancer at that time. As a young adult without a father, it was comforting to have the opportuntiy to share this situation with Robin. I too can say I benefited from his "gentle guidance"

Robin, in one of his last acts as a Dean, met with me (for almost 1 hour), a job candidate at that time. His charm, vision and sense of fairness won me over instantly in that "brief" meeting and, as a result, I joined UW in 1991 despite 5 other, overwhelmingly more competitive offers. This is how I remember Robin.
