Aunt Mae will truly be missed. Her kindness, dedication to her family, and her faith made her an excellent example for me. Aunt Mae remembered special occasions with a card, always making the recipient feel special. She used her hands to reach out to others. Throughout her retirement, Mae was always working on a handicraft for someone. She passed her time productively. Aunt Mae made beautiful baby hats for the neonatal unit at Grand River Hospital, as well as needlepoint pictures, and rug-hooked wall hangings, afghans, baby blankets, and whatever else was needed. She shared her strong Catholic faith, attended Mass faithfully and when her health failed her she continued to watch the Mass on TV and said her prayers at home. I will remember you. God bless you, Aunt Mae!

News of Mae’s passing was incredibly difficult to come to accept. Her vibrant personality and class cannot me appropriately measured in words. I had the pleasure of meeting this outstanding Lady in the fall of 1995 and she absolutely captivated my heart. Mae’s zest for life, her humour and love for her family is something that I will always treasure. Her incredible and unbreakable bond with her sister Aggie is and was stronger than steel. Mae was truly a majestic Lady who absolutely filled the lives of those around her with so much joy and laughter. Spending time with Mae was such an honour and a privilege. Words could never appropriately describe the Love, Respect and Admiration that Mae more than earned. Mae, may you Rest In Peace. You will be missed and remain in my thoughts and prayers forever, Chris Hambrook

Dear Aunt Mae,
Before you read this letter I want you to know that you are loved and when the gates of Heaven are ready for you I wish you well! I wanted to write this message to allow me to reflect on the wonderful experiences we have had together and to reflect on how much you mean to me!
I am so thankful that you have been a part of my life. Did you know that you are one of my role models? I appreciate your loving, beautiful and brilliant attitude!
You are such a talented and generous lady! I admire the blankets and baby hats that you made from simple balls of yarn. Do you remember the light-blue poncho you made for me as a child? I still have it to this day and I will treasure it forever!
Ever since I was little I was always excited to come and visit you at Waterloo Heights! I always enjoyed knocking on your door with the dragonfly door knocker, waiting with my Mom for your ever welcoming smile. You would always let us sit down while you would go to the kitchen to get us drinks and refreshments. I would help you serve the drinks in the kitchen while you would find some treats and your mouth watering muffins! I have always loved the muffins you made! Then you would discuss news of residents in your apartment, new successes of your family, and health concerns. You told the best stories! I can also recall you giving away (a) bag(s) of things that were no use to you but could be useful for someone else. My mother and I always enjoyed removing items from the bag(s) on the kitchen table and separating the items into two piles; to keep and to give away. My mother would be sure to give away the things that were no use to us to those who need it most. One of those individuals was my Dad's Aunt. She always appreciated your gently used clothes.
Remember when you decided you wanted to part with your mirrored dresser? My parents, and I had to disassemble the dresser and take it downstairs to Jerome Reitzel's and our vehicle in trips down the elevator. Once Dad and I were able to remove the long solid dresser from both of the vehicles, my Dad and I worked on repairing and replacing the wheels that allow the dresser to move. Ever since the dresser has been in my room I constantly think of you and all of the memories behind the dresser. You are so giving to share your dresser with me!
Finally, I appreciate your love of the Catholic faith. You are always true to your religion and are never shy when it comes to sharing your values with others. I remember when you mentioned that someone questioned why you had religious statues in your room. You were able to share that you are able to talk to them and you felt that the statues looked over you.
I hope my letter digs a bit deeper into your importance in my life and why you should be remembered. I wish that I could visit you before your time comes but this is not realistic. I'm sure that you would rather that I remember you how you were before cancer.
I love you forever and always!
Your great-niece,
Donna
P.S. I wanted to let you know that I was involved in Relay for Life this past May and my school raised over $48,000 for cancer research! Relay for Life also inspired me to donate twelve inches of my hair to Angel Hair for Kids, children who have cancer.
I also found this piece that Mother Teresa said about LIFE. This may help you to note what life brings and how we should approach it.
"Life is an opportunity, benefit from it.
Life is beauty, admire it.
Life is a dream, realize it.
Life is a challenge, meet it.
Life is a duty, complete it.
Life is a game, play it.
Life is a promise, fulfill it.
Life is sorrow, overcome it.
Life is a song, sing it.
Life is a struggle, accept it.
Life is a tragedy, confront it.
Life is an adventure, dare it.
Life is luck, make it.
Life is too precious, do not destroy it.
Life is life, fight for it."
― Mother Teresa
