To me, Jack was Camp Tawingo. His smiling face is a fundamental part of all of my camp memories and I consider my time at Camp Tawingo the best time of my life. I just learned of his passing by noticing his signature was missing from the annual birthday card I received today and he will be so missed but his spirit will live forever at Camp Tawingo and in the hearts of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Mike worked at Tawingo the Summer of 1968 as student from the U of W - we had just been married and Jack and Helen hired me with him to be together at Camp. Mike and I both had a life experience we have never forgotten. My favourite song that Jack led us in was "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" - we both loved it and I have sung it as a lullabye to our grandchildren when I wanted to lull them to sleep in my arms - THANK YOU, JACK!!!!

An important goal for most of us is "to make a difference". It's not as easy as one would think, but it is possible....and no one was a brighter example of that than Jack Pearse. I attended Camp Tawingo from 1962 - 1966, and I have to say that those few weeks during those long-ago summers have left an indelible impression on me throughout my life. I have Jack (and all of the great people he hired to help him) to thank for that. After such a busy and fulfilling life of making a BIG difference in so many lives, may he rest in eternal peace. He earned it.

Dear Camp Tawingo Buddies and the Pearse Family, I'll never forget meeting Jack for the first time when he came to Stratford to interview me for a job at Camp Tawingo. His eyes flashed with enthusiasm for all things related to nurturing a love of camping in the lives of others and I returned again and again and again to play and laugh and sing at Camp Tawingo. I'm sure that there's a secret ukulele lesson going on right now with Jack and the angels up there on Cloud 14... Big hugs from Jan

Jack was such an influence on so many. For me, I remember well meeting and getting to know him in 1968 at an OCA conference at the old Inn on the Park. As a young university student, camp staff member and someone who hoped to one day be a Camp director, Jack was the first full time Camp Director with whom I shared my ambition. He could not have been more encouraging. He talked to me about his career path to Tawingo and his hopes for his still young but very successful camp. He took time for a complete stranger at a very busy time for him. It was that meeting that cemented my goals. Jack and I also found we had another thing in common, We were both fans and admirers of my father Bruce Smith who was a CBC Toronto radio host from 1947 to 1978. Whenever we met, Jack would always want to know about Dad, and what he was doing. Thank you Jack for leading me and so many thousands of others to and through this life we love---at Camp. I first met Jack 40 years ago, when I was just a pup. I feel many aspects of my personal and professional life are what they are today as a result of his influence. There are very few individuals in this world who can claim to have touched and benefited the lives of so many. Jack is one of them, and I sense he was driven by a perpetual desire to make the lives of those around him better. A simple yet powerful motive. We should all hope to leave such a mark upon those we cross paths with.

It appears that Jack was starting Camp Tawingo at the same time that I was beginning my young day camp experiences. From the beginning, camp songs absolutely were my favorite activity at camp. My camp "career" began as a day camp aide whose job it was to lead songs on the bus going to/from day camp in the late 1960's.
I did not officially join the American Camp Association until 1980, and my first ACA conference was in Houston, Texas. This was the first time I got to hear Jack lead songs and he had a backup band, The Boys Camp Band. I was overcome with excitement!
From that year on, I went to any session led by Jack or any of his highly talented Camp Tawingo staff led, especially if songs were a part of the training.
I seem to recall Jack and Nelson Weiters leading Wimbowey (In the Jungle) at some point in time. Obviously Nelson was telling Jack exactly how to lead HIS song.
I remember participating in a reception in Washington D.C. when the International Camping Federation beginnings were being discussed. Coming from a camp that hired 20 - 30 staff from a wide assortment of countries, I was thrilled. In that conversation I remember Jack and Armand Ball leading the discussion.
To sum it up, when I think of Jack Pearce, I think of the "Great Ones," (okay, that is after I smile and start thinking of some of Jack's songs) -- these are the people who have gone before and made the world better for those of us who attempt to fill their footsteps when they are gone.
Thank you for being a leader and mentor in this Camping Movement.

I had the benefit of being a Tawingo camper for 5 sessions back in the 70s and now my own kids just returned from their first session yesterday. Listening to them talk about random stories of camp life in the car on the way home brought back so many good memories but also the feeling that camp Tawingo never really left me. It was such a comfortable environment that allowed me to learn so much about nature, camping but mostly about relationships and team building. Jack created that environment with his vision, energy and positive attitude: quite the lethal combination! Thanks you so much, Jack, for the gift of Camp Tawingo; Thank you Mike for keeping his spirit alive at Camp.

I feel very grateful and privileged to have been the beneficiary of Jack's vision. My time as a camper was a highlight of my childhood and the lessons I learned as a TLC, counsellor and Section Director have had a profound impact on who I am today. As you know all the Palm boys spent many years at Camp Tawingo and became better persons for all the camp experiences and the chance to grow and share and help others. Now their boys are at the camp and having the same opportunities. We will all miss Jack but his legacy will all we with all of us. We just wish we could have been at Camp to honour him with you all. Sincerely, Sally and all her Boys

The Rossiter Family made a donation to Camp Tawingo Campership Fund
Our family sends our most heartfelt condolences to the entire Pearse family and Tawingo community. Jack enhanced and changed the lives of two generations of Rossiters. Tawingo was a home to us, developing our character, nurturing our talents and creating friendships for over four decades. Camp songs were sung routinely around our dinner table, and tales of summer adventure were a highlight in our home. We thank Jack for creating a place of such childhood wonder, and helping so many of us grow into ourselves; becoming strong, capable and confident leaders as adults. He leaves behind not just memories, but better, stronger, happier people in this world due to his many contributions in the camping world and beyond. We hope our contribution to the Camp Tawingo Campership Fund can help give a child the opportunity to experience what Jack instilled in all of us: a sense of wonder, independence and a love for our world, starting at camp. Sending all of our love and best wishes. - The Rossiters

We are deeply indebted to Jack Pearse and the leadership he provided to me Janet Simmons, one of his students in the 60's. But even more so, Byron and I are thankful and in awe of the impact that Jack has had on the lives of our 3 children, Ken, Kristin and Dan Simmons as they grew and developed under the philosophy and leadership that Jack created at Camp Tawingo. We send our condolences to Helen, Mike and Tia and their families. Jack Pearse will not be forgotten.
