Obituary of James Hartnell
James passed away at Freeport Hospital, Kitchener October 11, 2013 at the age of 90.
He was born in Rangoon, Burma on July 29, 1923, the fifth child of a family of seven children. Jim's education was cut short by World War II. He volunteered to join the navy in Rangoon in July, 1940 and served for most of the war at sea, achieving the rank of Lieutenant.
He married Joan Halpin on August 2, 1947, a union that was to last over 61 years. After the war Jim worked as an engineer in a jute mill in what was then East Pakistan. The family moved to England in 1953, and then to Canada in 1958. In 1988 he retired from his position as a Senior Vice-President at Canada Alloy Castings in Kitchener, Ontario.
Jim was an avid golfer and embraced technology - he owned, and was adept at using, several computers, an Ipad and an Iphone.
Jim's beloved wife Joan passed away in 2008. He is survived by six children, Jennifer (Bill Frolick); John (Lynn); Jane (Rodney Gibson); Jeffrey (Carla); Jillian (Kevin McConnen); and Janess (Barry Hunt). Jim will be sadly missed by his eight granddaughters, seven grandsons and one great-granddaughter.
Family and friends are invited to gather at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Thursday, October 17, 2013 from 2 to 3 p.m. followed by a Memorial Service in the Funeral Home Chapel at 3 p.m. Rev. Dr. Bruce Sweet officiating. A light reception will follow in the Fireside Reception Room.
