Obituary of Robert W. Fisher

Passed away peacefully at Sunnyside Home in Kitchener, on Saturday, August 2, 2014 in his 83rd year. Loving husband for 59 years to Joyce (nee Thornton). Dear father to Beth Metzger (Larry), Fran Brenneman (Greg), Bob Fisher (Conny) and Warren Fisher (Bente Skau). Granddaddy to Melinda and Rachel Metzger, Valerie Georgescu (John); Zack, Seth and Miles Brenneman; Chris and Justin Fisher; and Ardra and Odin Fisher-Skau. Predeceased by his sister, Bette Petteway, and his neice, Sara Charruhas. Bob was born in Jacksonville, Florida. He received a B.A. summa cum laude in Sociology from Duke University, a Bachelor of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. After teaching at Northwestern University in Illinois, Bob immigrated to Canada to assume a professorship in Religion and Culture at Waterloo Lutheran University (Wilfrid Laurier University), where he taught from 1967 to his retirement in 1997. During his career, Dr. Fisher touched thousands of lives through his teaching, including his ground breaking travel seminars to the near, middle and far-east. Friends will be received at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, on Wednesday, August 6, 2014, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A private interment will be held on Thursday. Bob was a strong supporter of the arts, a life-long member and a former president of the Grand Philharmonic Choir. The family wishes to thank the staff of Sunnyside Home, Castle Kilbride wing, for their dedicated and loving care of Bob.
