Obituary of Jeanette Hooper-Rooney

Jan Hooper-Rooney passed away on Wednesday December 3, 2014, with family at her side. Beloved wife of Edward (Ted) Rooney. Loving Mother of Gerald Hooper (Margaret), David Hooper (Theresa) of Waterloo and John Hooper of Christchurch New Zealand; step- daughter Anne Rooney of Vancouver, step-son David Rooney (Angela) of Mississauga and Christopher Rooney (Margaret) of Bracebridge. Devoted Grandma of Robert (Nadine), Stephen (Sandie), Susan Stuebing (Bradley), Michael (Kelly), James (Michelle), Samuel, Jessica (Nathan) and Grace Hooper; Kyle, Allissa, Austin, Brendan, Connor and Landon Rooney. She also has four great grandchildren. Jan was predeceased by her husband Robert Hooper (1973) and her brother Joseph Tokar of Phoenix Arizona (1996). Jan was born in Kriva Czechoslovakia on July 10, 1922 and immigrated to Canada with her father (Mother deceased) and brother in 1938 to escape the Nazi German occupation and to start a new life in Canada. She married Bob Hooper in 1942 who was then serving in the RCAF. She enjoyed working for many years in banking with Scotiabank and RBC and she was especially proud of her work as a volunteer at the Grand River Hospital. She was recognized as an "Outstanding Volunteer" with the Grand River Hospital in 2001 and completed 34 years of service to the hospital in 2008. Jan was a member of the Garden Club, Oktoberfest Women's Committee and Club Willowells. For many years she enjoyed winters at Victoria Estate, Port Charlotte and summers at her much loved cottage at Tobermory. The family will receive friends at the Erb and Good funeral home 171 King street South Waterloo at 10:00 am on Thursday December 11, 2014 which will be followed by a service at 11:00 am and a reception at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jan's memory would be appreciated to Grand River Hospital Foundation or St Mary's Hospital Foundation.
