Monika Robinson

Obituary of Monika Robinson

Born on March 21, 1946, Monika was a lover of life, a passionate teacher and an extraordinary gardener. She lived life with optimism, zest, and a healthy dose of skepticism when warranted. Monika was an Aries, and as a true ram she shied away from nothing and often was the leader who got things done. She was born in Hochheim-the heart of Germany's champagne country-and many friends will fondly remember clinking a sparkling glass of 'sekt' with Monika. Monika was an outstanding and popular teacher at Forest Heights Collegiate and later at Eastwood, where she was Modern Languages Department Head. For 40 years, Frau/ Madam Matthaes taught German and French to thousands of students. But she taught far more than languages-she brought the cultures of Germany and France to life, introducing her students to the foods, music, festivals and literature of the countries she loved. Any opportunity to host an in-classroom event or a staff party was always accompanied by wonderful cuisine and festivities. Just prior to her retirement, Monika was honoured with the Stewart Award for Teacher Excellence, awarded to a teacher in the Region of Waterloo who most inspires her students to pursue knowledge, and discover meaning and order through learning. After retirement in 1999, Monika became Principal of the Concordia German Language School. For the next nine years, she poured her passion for teaching, her incredible energy and liveliness into the largest Saturday German School in Canada, growing enrolment every year, and introducing innovative learning and teaching strategies to students and teachers. Monika's multi-racial, multi-ethnic family spans the globe from Vietnam to Germany; from British Columbia and Utah to Nova Scotia; and throughout southern Ontario. In order of age-starting with the youngest-she is survived by Amelia, Marley, Izayah, Ritter, Yvonne, Liz, Ben, Philip, Henry Jr., Michelle, Diep, Stephanie, Lexi, Richard, Bill Jr., Robin, Dave, Ralf, Birgit, Caroline, Claudia, Ron, Henry Sr., Christa, Peter, Michael, Gaby, Susan, Rita, Peter, Horst, and Bill Sr. Monika was the rock of our family, dispensing advice whether you wanted it or not, encouraging us-even prodding us-to be better versions of ourselves. She is predeceased by her parents Maria and Henry Hornberger and spouse, Erhard Matthaes. Seven years ago, Monika married her long-time friend and colleague, Steve Robinson. He was her partner, lover, companion, and confidant. Together they created a vibrant home that spilled over with love, laughter and music to welcome friends and family for long and short stays. Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter were treasured celebrations, as were their dinner and garden parties, and fun casual get togethers-often accompanied by Steve on piano. Steve and Monika's relationship was magic! For nearly 2 years Monika valiantly fought the cancer that ultimately claimed her life on March 2, 2016. Following a short stay at Grand River Hospital, Monika passed away surrounded by her family and WoW friends. Special thanks to Dr. Rebecca Kruisselbrink and the nursing team on 5 South. Their compassion, kindness and excellent care are so appreciated by the family. With much sadness, shock and disbelief, we say 'auf wiedersehen' to our beloved wife, mother, Oma, sister, and friend. 'Liebe Monika, schlafe gut und traueme suess von sauren Gurken!' We love you, we miss you, and we'll always treasure your love and friendship. A private family committal will take place next week. For those who wish to pay tribute to Monika, this summer Steve and family will host a celebration of her life when her cherished garden is in full bloom. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Grand River Hospital or a charity of your choice and may be arranged through the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S. Waterloo at www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.
