Years ago, 1976, my friend Holly and I went door to door to sell oranges and grapefruit to fundraise for our high school library. My name was Vi, but we inverted the 'v i' to I V, so we'd be Holly and IV. Evelyn answered the door; she'd been staying with her parents in Niagara on the Lake, and they all invited us in for hot cocoa and biscuits, and of course, they purchased a box of oranges. We became friends, and they invited us in regularly for the remainder of the school year to join them for tea, cocoa and biscuits. We enjoyed ourselves immensely, as we were in boarding school, and we were from Kitchener. At the end of the school year, my parents couldn't attend my graduation, so Evelyn kindly volunteered to attend and be my 'mom' for the day. I'll never forget this kindness. We stayed in touch for a few years, but eventually I lost touch, however I have never forgotten Evelyn, or her parents, as we shared many hours of laughter and story telling. I live in Winnipeg now, and am sad that I only saw this obituary 12 years after the fact. God bless the family, and know that she has been part of my life in a very meaningful, special way.
