John R. Harris posted a condolence
Thursday, December 2, 2010
Coming from the distant past in Elora, John Harris here. I recognized Jim's name on The Globe & Mail website and clicked through to find out, "Is this the Jim Chalmers I knew?" As a teenager in Elora in the 1970s I remember spending an afternoon with Jim at his place on South River Rd. I can't say I knew him well but he struck me as the salt of the Earth, a truly decent and compassionate man. I'm writing from Japan where I've lived for many years. Just wanted to pass on a big hug. John

Mr. Chalmers was my Grade 8 teacher at Courtland Ave public school many years ago. I thank him for insisting on excellency in his students. Most of the time he scared me to death and I sure didn't want to make him mad. I can still remember when he practiced the Bag Pipes in the front hall before school started at 9. They and he gave me goosebumps then, as they do now! God Rest You Well Mr. Chalmers. Heaven is richer with your presence.

Isobel, Bruce, Jane, Ian and families, We have been reflecting on the impact that Jim had on so many lives, but in particular ours. A myriad of stories, sounds (laughter), smells(wood dust and finishes) and emotions arose in our conversations. Adjectives abounded in our sentences: inspirational, fair, decisive, loyal, visionary. Jim's influence was as a father, a mentor, an advocate, a cheer leader, an educator, but most of all, a friend. Our lives were enriched by Jim and we are forever grateful. With love,
