Obituary of James Chalmers

After a fulfilling life, Jim passed away in his 80th year on Monday, November 29th. His family was his greatest joy. Loving husband of Isobel for 53 years and father to Bruce, (Louise), Jane Barratt (Greg) and Iain (Elizabeth). He was proud grandfather to nine grandchildren; Alec, Tori, Thomas, Duncan, Hannah, Peter, Angus, Aidan and Kate. Born on a farm in North Easthope Township, Jim spent his entire life as a passionate educator, who started teaching in a one room school in 1954. After 18 years in public education, he continued to influence students and staff as the founding Headmaster of St. John's-Kilmarnock School, which was started in Elora in 1972. More recently, he was Director of Liaison at Renison University College. Jim was an active leader and visionary in the community particularly in the field of education and music. Over the years his accomplishments were recognized with various awards, including the Order of the Diocese of Niagara, Queen Elizabeth Silver Jubilee Medal, Order of St John's-Kilmarnock School, Senior Fellow of Renison University College and the Florence Nightingale award. Jim's legacy remains with the hundreds of students and faculty he influenced over his lifetime. However, his greatest pride was his family. Visitation will be held at the Erb and Good Family Funeral Home 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Thursday December 2, 2010 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A Service of Thanksgiving for Jim's life will be held at the chapel at St. John's-Kilmarnock School, 2201 Shantz Station Road, Breslau on Friday, December 3 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre, St. John's Anglican Church, Elora or St. John's-Kilmarnock School through the funeral home at www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.
