Karin Bergen

Obituary of Karin Bergen

Karin Bergen died peacefully, surrounded by her family, on January 22, 2011. She was born in Waterloo on May 6, 1927 to Kaethe (Cornies) and Nicholas Schroeder who had just emigrated from Russia in 1926. Karin was a "people" person, with a vivacious personality, who enjoyed helping others. She particularly loved children of all ages, and at age 19, fulfilled her dream of becoming a dedicated teacher. For over 25 years, Karin taught mainly at Suddaby, Empire, and Elizabeth Ziegler schools, retiring at the latter where she had begun her own schooling. She also taught Sunday School, even at the cottage, English at night school, and tutored at her home. She took a special interest in each of her students' needs, keeping in touch with many of them throughout her life. Karin also served on the Waterloo Public Library Board for many years. Karin married her beloved Abe in 1949. They had three wonderful children: Douglas (Louise); Diane Stang (Doug); and Nancy Ozaruk (Peter). "Mom, you are the glue that keeps our family together." Karin and Abe showed great devotion to their family and were thrilled to be Oma and Opa to four delightful grandchildren: Emily (Mike) and Brennan Stang, and Monica and Alexandra Ozaruk. Emily, Brennan, Monica, and Alexandra will always cherish the memories they created with their "Oma-Darling" and will feel her love forever. Karin will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends, including her sister, Lily Forler (Dick), sister-in-law, Aggie Bergen, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and so many special friends who span across the globe. Karin was predeceased by her parents, and her sisters Marg Moore (Dinty) and Lucy Dowsett (Bruce). Abe will dearly miss his "Lushy" who will always be a part of him. He will treasure the 61 wonderful years of togetherness that they shared. The family invites those who wish to celebrate Karin's life to a memorial gathering at Erb & Good Family Funeral Home in the Fireside Reception Room, 171 King Street S., Waterloo, on Sunday, January 30 from 1:00 to 4:30. The tribute to Karin will take place at 2:15. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and can be arranged through the funeral home at www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.
