For those of you who don't know, my Grandfather loved cars! Whether he owned them, or drove them, he just loved cars!
I remember as a little girl visiting from Toronto (when gas was much cheaper, and visits more plentiful), that every now and then, my Grandpa would have a new car in the driveway! "WOW" I thought to myself…"another new car"! I remember asking him, "what happened to the old one?", and he would reply, "It was just time for a new one"! It wasn't until much later in life that I realized the lease on their current car was fulfilled, and thus granting him access to a new car! And for what felt like every few months to me, (and in reality was probably every few years), he treated himself to that brand new car! For someone who loved cars, this was the best way to go about it!
I also remember traveling with him one time on a bus he drove for the K-W Habilitation Center. It is a center for individuals with developmental disabilities. He warned me that some of the people getting onto the bus would be different than me, but they really wanted to be my friend! And friends we became really quickly! I could tell back then, that he had an impact on these individuals. On many of our trips to the mall, we would run into some of the people from the bus. He would always stop and talk to them, and I could see how special he made them feel. It didn't matter to him that they were different, he treated them the same as he would any other person! I would want him to know that this was one of the most important lessons in life that were instilled in me!
My Grandpa and I were always very close! His birthday was approaching, and on one of my visits, I asked him what he wanted for his birthday, he replied, "all I want for my birthday is a brand new car"! So, with my 5 year old mind, and on the return visit, I made my parents stop at Fairview Mall so I can pick him up his present. I dragged them into Sears (I think), and took them all the way to the toy department. I don't think anyone really understood what I was looking for, but I finally found it! I had picked out the shiniest blue miniature car I could find! It was the perfect gift!!! Just what he asked for…a brand new car! The details are fuzzy, but I'm sure I wrapped it up, and presented it to him very proudly. And I will never forget the look on his face when he opened it…A little confused at first, but then he laughed! A simple laugh so not to disappoint me, and then thanked me for his new car…
"it's exactly what I wanted". My Grandpa had always kept that toy car in the drawer for many years, but over time it got lost in the shuffle. But I always knew who much he appreciated the thought I had put into his gift!
Now, I am much older, and I had just bought my new car. I remember shopping around in Kitchener with him, asking him advice on certain "car things". He really wanted me to buy one when I was in town, but I had held off a little longer to be sure of the big purchase. I remember one day, he called my house to tell me that he had found another dealership with a car that was a good price. And although I didn't buy it in Kitchener, I did buy the car we were looking at! A red 2001 Toyota Corolla! I was so excited to drive it to Kitchener for our visit, and so I could take him for a ride. He loved it of course! And he liked mine so much. Would you believe it? A few months later, he had gone out and bought the very same car! A red Toyota Corolla!
So not only did he have a major impact on my life, I'm sure I had some small impact on his life as well!!! He taught me things that are truly un-describable… things that arose from feelings and emotions…things that are now centered around my existence!
And if I had just one wish for you Grandpa, I hope that you will find your dream car in heaven. Maybe even a convertible, and so in your own words…" the sun can kiss my body"!
I love you, and I will miss you deeply. But our memories are treasures, and can never be lost!
Love Kristy xoxoxo

When I was a little one, I was always asked if I peed before we got in the car.
This particular trip, I hadn't been asked, and I forgot to mention that I hadn't gone. He took me to McDonald's.
From that day on, for a very long time, when I got into the car with Grandpa, I would say, "Grandpa, I have to pee, let's go to McDonald's!"
Needless to say, he never fell for it again.

I only met Mr. Fletcher once, but that one time left me with a great impression. I wish I could have spent more time with him and got to have known him better. My condolences to the family and especially to Mrs. Fletcher.
