To the Friends and Family of Marguerite Brooke: I read in the Globe and Mail today of the passing of Marguerite Brooke. It brings a cloud of memories of my childhood in Port Credit. We lived at the intersection of Inglewood Road and Mona Road. Marguerite and her husband Ken Partridge lived across the road. My father, Roy Gillespie and his wife Gene had built a house at 110 Inglewood Drive in the late 1940’s. After leaving the Air Force in 1945, my father had the opportunity to further his education and was eventually able to become a lawyer in 1952. After a couple of years in Toronto he began practicing law as a sole practitioner in Port Credit in 1954. At that time Ken and Marguerite were our neighbours and very supportive of my father as he was struggling to develop a law practice and raise a young family. Ken was a partner in the law firm of Jackson, Partridge, Van Every, and Watson as it was known then. They occupied offices at the northeast corner of Lakeshore Road and Stave Bank Road in a building owned by Mr. Jackson. In about 1956 Ken Partridge was able to convince his partners to bring my father into the firm. I remember as a young boy Ken and Marguerite visiting our house for dinner as I had to be dressed up and on my best behaviour. I also remember a sort of formal party where my bother Jamie and I were allowed to visit for a short while at the Partridge’s house before being taken home by the baby sitter. I think that was the party in honour of me dad’s induction into the firm. I also remember when Ken Partridge died in 1958. I was about 9 years old. There had been an emergency in the night. My father had to go out late. There was an air of grave concern. My parents did not really tell me what was going on until later. I don’t remember much about the later years except that at some point Marguerite had remarried and moved away. Many years later after my father’s death, I visited Marguerite with my mother at her home in Grand Valley. I recall her discussion about her musical endeavours and how they were occupying her time. My father died in 1988 and my mother passed away in 2008 so there is no one in our family who had any adult remembrances of Marguerite. I am sure that if my parents were here they would have passed on their warmest regards and condolences to Marguerite’s family and friends. I hope this message will do as a poor semblance of remembrances and friendships of old. Marguerite was always very gracious and generous and a good friend to our family when it was important. I am sure that she enriched the lives of many, including her new family. On behalf of the Gillespie children, Kent, James and Karen, please accept our condolences and sympathy on this occasion.

I worked often with Marguerite in her garden. Each of her plants and trees had a story. She was a wonderful lady.
