I recall a story from Hugh about the time that he started working at the University in the mid sixties. He came to KW and wanted to ask directions, so he stopped at a newspaper stand where he knew most vendors could speak German. He asked the person if they could direct him to 'Veber' street (the correct German pronunciation). The merchant replied: "Oh, you mean 'Weeber' street (the common but not really German pronunciation). You have to say it right, you know, there are a lot of German people living around here!"
