It is with my deepest condolences to the Telegdi family who have lost a great man. When I got the news from Dan Chapman that his good friend had passed away. All though I have never met Mr Telegdi his work with youth, Aboriginals, the LGBT community, war brides and their children of WWII and lost Canadian's has left a hug mark on Canada's Parliament. His tireless work will never be forgotten. I thank you Mr. Telegdi for fighting for the little people. We will never in this generation have a hero such as Andrew again. Mr.Telegdi has left some big shoes to fill, and he has done so much for all Canadian's. Being a lost Canadian I thank you again for standing up to the Canadian government and working to protect us lost Canadian's. May peace and comfort be with your family and friends. You will truly be missed Mr.Telegdi, God bless you sir.

Nancy … we have worked together since 2001 and have come to be such good friends. I didn’t meet Andrew until years later, but I knew him well much before that … cause you were so very proud of him.
You were so busy in your own profession, Nancy, but you worked hard backing Andrew and supporting him totally in his successful political career. Nancy and Erin … my heart goes out to you in the loss of much loved husband and father. I pray that God will give you strength as you recall the many precious memories and touch your hearts and spirits with His healing hands

I am very sorry to hear about Andrew's passing. I believe he was a true leader, just from the one aspect of his life that I was privileged to know about. He took action for the Lost Canadians where almost all other members of government turned a blind eye.

I feel honoured and privileged that I had the opportunity to meet Andrew during one of the Canada Day celebrations in Gibsons and in Vancouver during his efforts to bring Canadian Citizenship back to many Lost Canadians.
Thanks to Andrew and Don I was able to tell my story in Vancouver at one of the CIMM meetings. A very emotional experience to say the least.
I was one of the Lost Canadians who benefited from the tireless effort of Andrew and Don Chapman who changed the Canadian Citizenship Law. The restoration of my Canadian citizenship has meant more than words can describe. It has re-connected my family to a country that I love.
My thoughts and prayers are with you Nancy, Erin and all the Telegdi Family.

Our hearts are deeply saddened by the loss of Andrew and he is deeply missed. What an amazing human being with a heart of gold and an all consuming passion for doing what was right for his fellow men. He was driven by the core of his being and achieved greatness by what he selflessly gave to the humanity of us all. He cared for people, justice and for what was fair and right. Andrew loved his family and friends dearly and touched so many of those around him in ways that will continue to become apparent for years and years to come. Through his efforts he reunited over a million people with their homeland of Canada by changing the landscape of Citizenship laws. Tirelessly pushing forward, he never gave up and has changed history for the better. I feel honoured and humbled to have you as a friend and your spirit will continue to be my inspiration in life. Thank you for being you and sharing so much of you with so many.

Andrew Telegdi was a force to be reckoned with, a man who stood up for what was right no matter the cost. His hard work, dedication and compassion for both truth and justice has made Canada as a country and Canadians as a people better off in innumerable ways.
I met Andrew when I was 15 and spent much time with him and my dad in Ottawa as they both fought for the rights of the Lost Canadians and he always struck me as a man one felt truly lucky to know. I admired his work ethic, his ability to listen to the people and to really take to heart what mattered most. He was like an extension of the family with how much he and my dad spoke and this loss is felt deeply within my family.
I am a better person for having known him. His name will always strike a chord within me, reminding me of the tremendous individual that he was and of all the extraordinary achievements he made in his lifetime, and with each moment I think back upon his memory, I will strive to be more like the man he was; a hero. Thank you Andrew, you really did make a difference.

We were very saddened to hear of Andrew's passing and want to convey our heartfelt condolences to Nancy, Erin and family.
We knew Andrew beginning with his days as a firebrand at the University of Waterloo but got to know him much better during his federal electoral campaigns. His views and values were at least partly shaped by his immigrant/refugee experience, and he became a bull-dog defender of human rights and the interests of the weak, vulnerable and marginalized. He will be remembered not only by his family and friends but across Canada for his determined and courageous championship of social justice and fair play.
Rest in Peace dear friend, you will be sorely missed.

I feel an enormous sadness knowing Andrew passed away. He TRULY was a champion and merits SO MUCH recognition for his role in guiding, leading, instructing, supporting, rallying, lobbying for The Lost Canadians battle for citizenship. He got it. He completely GOT it. Profoundly and passionately. He fully understood how vital citizenship is to, and for, each of us. From the beginning. And he held onto his firm belief, never letting us down with his support: as a man, as a politician, as a Canadian.
I carry such warm memories of our work together, the laughter and the tears. It was an amazing time! Andrew added tenacity, sensitivity, intelligence and support in such a wonderful way. This is his legacy to Canada.
THANK YOU, Andrew for everything to you did to personally help my family and I feel supported the entire time we fought the government to regain citizenship for myself and our two sons.
Please accept my deepest condolences. Rest in peace, Andrew...you were a bright candle that lit our way.

It was with a very very heavy heart that we learnt Tuesday morning of the passing of our dear friend, colleague and political mentor.
We have known the Honourable Andrew Telegdi since the mid eighties. We used to talk about his family's escape from Hungary and how they walked through mine fields in search of a better life and future. This is what helped make a tremendous New Canadian Refugee Immigrant into a tremendous Icon.
Andrew was elected to the 35th Canadian Parliament along with our friend John English. Andrew served both the Waterloo riding and then Kitchener Waterloo from 1993 to 2008. I was in Ottawa for the swearing in celebration and honoured to share the historic moment and to see the pride of this Hungarian New Canadian. Although he was of Hungarian descent and John of German, we celebrated at Fairuz with Middle Eastern food.
On the evening of the Government celebration at Rideau Hall, Andrew took me and a dear friend, Heather Baker, to the top of the Peace Tower at MIDNIGHT. What a view and sense of triumph for this New Canadian. It was the defining moment of a stalwart political journey.
Andrew was a great Canadian, an immigrant who excelled in our great country. He was President of the UW Federation of Students for 2 years, founder of the Justice Dinner, Youth in Conflict with the Law, Councillor of the City of Waterloo and Regional Municipality of Waterloo, Chair and Co-Chair of many committees such as Citizens and Immigration (a portfolio near and dear to his heart), SW Caucus and the Aboriginal file to name a few.
Andrew served our community and his constituents (regardless of their political stripes) with a fierce tenacity that should be a model for our elected officials. He was our Waterloo Champion, he fought ferociously for his beliefs even if it meant voting against the Government.
I remember when the Blackberry emerged and that Andrew was one of the first Canadian MPs to use the "little black box" in Ottawa. Andrew and then Waterloo Mayor Brian Turnbull helped Mike and Jim by championing the Blackberry.
I remember the first 10 companies that helped form Communitech with Andrew's help. He helped Vince Schirelli, the first Communitech CEO, move the organization forward and look where Communitech is today.
It is vintage Andrew, if he believed in you or in a case, he fiercely fought for you. He was the champion of the underdog and under represented. Aside from all the above Andrew Telegdi's legacy will be enshrined in his most tenacious fight of the Citizenship Revocation Act. For Andrew it was a question of due process and respecting the Charter of Rights. Andrew believed that the courts should have the final decision on revocation not the Government. To all those who knew him or worked with him, for all community organizations including his Aboriginal friends in BC, to all the fund raisers (he was the best) we have lost a great community leader and a great, great Canadian.
Andrew, when John said he had visited with you on Saturday and you were cheering on the "marchers" world wide and that you had a lively discussion about Trump and CNN, I said that was "vintage Telegdi"
Andrew, thank you for enriching us with your friendship for so many years. Thank you for making us all believe that "this is the best country in the world" where dreams can be realized.
You are gone too soon, your legacy will endure and your memory will be eternal.
To Nancy and Erin, our hugs, kisses and condolences.
Rest in Peace our Hungarian Immigrant Canadian passionate Liberal hero. We salute you, we will miss you.
The tears will dry, the smiles will fade but your memory will be eternal.
May God bless you.
Say hello to Hilde.....you have a lot to talk about

A True Hero
What makes a man a hero?
I've often thought this through.
It's someone who is macho?
It's someone who is true?
No, that is not a hero.
He's just a simple man.
Always there when things go wrong
and who does the best he can.
He lends a strong shoulder
To ease the flow of tears
He holds high the lantern
To drive away your fears.
His smile was just enough
To give encouragement.
His frown more than adequate
To make one soon relent.
When some had need of guidance
His ears he'd freely lend
Advice came in abundance
You chose, not him could you offend.
He had no need of medals
Or glory this is true.
That's why, dear Andrew
Our hero has to be you.

When I learned that my family had been stripped of Canadian citizenship back in 2004, I was in disbelief and despair over the future. Thankfully, I soon learned I was, at least, not alone, and that many Lost Canadians were in similar straits. That association led me to testify about it in Ottawa, and to have the privilege of meeting a wonderful man, a true hero in his continued work in the interests of citizenship, social justice and democracy: that was Andrew Telegdi. I know that, long after his party was in government, he never gave up. Thanks to Andrew's work with Don Chapman, thousands of Lost Canadians regained their citizenship, not all at once, but as various amendments were made under his relentless advocacy. And he still kept on with his support, advice and advocacy for those of us still-Lost Canadians, trying to prevent the repeat in future of the same predicament for others.
People like Andrew are very rare. We Lost Canadians were only one of the many causes he championed, only one of the groups of people he touched, We were privileged indeed to share his care and concern.
To Nancy and Erin, please accept my sincere sympathy at the loss of your husband and father. May you find some peace in knowing that he will never be forgotten by so many people and his work will go on.

I was so sad to hear of Andrew's passing. He and I were both Hungarian refugee children in 1957. When I wrote my memoir about escaping from the Hungarian Revolution, Andrew supported my book with testimonials, such as the one below. We had several long conversations about our similar experiences. He also purchased a large number of books, which he distributed.
"I received a wonderful book by Bobbie Kalman titled Refugee Child. The book is about the Hungarian Revolution and how it was seen through the eyes of a nine year old…I was eleven years old when I arrived in Canada with my family and this book resonated with my experiences. It reminded me of how well we were treated in Austria, where we were befriended by an Austrian family. It also reminded me of the heroic effort of Austrians in offering refuge to 90% of the 200,000 refugees who fled Hungary."
I will never forget your kindness and support, Andrew.
