Our friend, Stan Ashby, loved the artworks of Tom Thompson. When in the hospital, he said that this painting of Algonquin Park by his daughter Alysa, helped him get through the long nights.

Our friend, Stan Ashby, loved canoeing in Algonquin Park. He even hand-carved his own very light canoe paddle, using hard-to-find sitka spruce wood.

I am so sorry to hear about Stan. I was good friends with Stan when we went to Davisville PS.
I have a picture of Stan at my birthday party in 1955 and have good memories of Stan during our childhood.
After 50 years, I was hoping to see Stan on Oct 15th at the 1965 NTCI class luncheon at the Jolly Miller. Unfortunately, Stan was unable to attend the luncheon.
Peter Keevil sent me Stan’s telephone number and I phoned Stan. We had a nice chat about our early childhood and about our families.
Rest in Peace Stan

Stan and I shared a music class, as well as being members of the North Toronto Collegiate Institute orchestra, for probably four years. I remember him as the lean and lanky quiet guy on the bass viol, just behind me and to the right, as I played cello.
We met again at the 50th reunion of the 1965 NTCI graduation class and to my surprise (as I was probably much quieter than him!), he remembered me.
I am saddened by Stan's early demise, he has moved on much too soon.
I extend my heartfelt sympathy to his family, who have suffered a great loss of father, brother and grandfather.
He was a brave, friendly and kind man. I am grateful that I was able to reconnect after so many years and will think of him whenever I see a bass viol player in an orchestra or ensemble. He was part of the generation that is the leading edge of the baby boomers.

My deepest condolences to Stan's family. I remember him from North Toronto Collegiate Institute where we were in classes together and involved with music and drama departments. We are both '65 graduates. He was such a kind, gentle person and I am happy to have known him, but so sad that he left this life at such a young age (yes, young, as I am the same age!).
Warm regards, Solveig Barber (nee Hvidsten)

STAN ASHBY
I first met Stan in grade 9 on Cadet’s Day. He was the one boy to faint onto the ground under the sun in his heavy military garb. When I got into grade 10 and saw Stan playing bass violin behind me in the French horn section, we started up a conversation and sound found we took the same school route, up Redpath north of Transfiguration church. We often walked together.
Stan had a keen sense of humour and when a teacher had said about a math problem, “Take it or leave it”, Stan had whispered to me, “Bad attitude”. He could make bird-chirp sounds and with his flapping cheeks, the sound of a flock taking flight. Stan made other sounds and laughed at one I could make, even yelling it in later years, every time he would drive around my house corner.
Stan’s elder brother was a physician and had an antique MG, which Stan and I took to a high school football game. He and I spent a year in senior Chemistry class sharing a common desk and both having notes from earlier students, playing hangman. I forget who won the full year.
After high school, I bumped into Stan once at a stag party for a mutual friend and he told me about the sudden deaths of a fellow student and a former teacher. What, however, impressed me most was Stan’s coming, decades later with his Parkinson’s, all the way from his Milton home to a Bay-Bloor book signing of my novel, The SECOND.
Stan was a uniquely kind and gentle man, and my life is richer for having known him.

I am very sorry to learn of this. When Stan attended our North Toronto Collegiate reunion in 2015 it was clear that he had more than his share of health issues, but he was still the same lovely guy that I recalled from our school days. My condolences to his family. Rest well, Stan.

So sorry to hear about Stan. Your message brought back a lot of happy memories of days at Davisville and North Toronto but especially those walks to high school. I would arrive at Stan’s house about 8:30 just as he would be running down stairs. His mom would give him a bacon and jam sandwich and then we would go to Peter Keevil's house next door or, often as Stan was late he would come to his. Then arrive at NTCI just as the 2 minute bell was sounding.
I will still make myself a bacon and jam sandwich occasionally – thanks Mrs Ashby.
I think my favourite memory of Stan was one night very late we were walking home from some event. We stopped in front of Tom McFarland’s house and all the light were off (I think it was about 2 am.) Then Stan said “Watch this.” He then whistled very loudly took off as fast as he could leaving me standing naively in front of Tom’s house while their dog started barking loudly waking everyone.
A great guy.
We lost touch when I moved west but fond memories.
