We are so saddened about Gerry’s death. He was a wonderful man.
Just as Steve Tuckwood already mentioned, one of my first recollections of Gerry was at Christ Lutheran Church. I would watch in awe as each Sunday he and Shirley would fill up the front church row with all 5 kids between them. For years, Gerry was involved in many aspects of Lutheran life at his church. He was one of those people who gave freely of his time even when home and work demands must have been so great.
When I was a teen my parents bought a cottage two places over from Wildfangs at Gillies Lake. “Jer’s Place” was always a buzz of activity with all their kids, significant others and eventually grandchildren. The Wildfangs truly became extended family of ours, and Ger became Papa Gerry to all our Henkel grandchildren. He always wanted to know what they were up to in their sports and activities.
My husband Rod and I were just reminiscing that in the late afternoon Ger would show up at the Henkel cottage looking to have a beverage with my dad. Inevitably, my dad would still be napping. Sometimes, Ger could be persuaded to sit and have a drink with us. Other times, he would wander back up the road and tell us to send dad over when he awoke. Just sitting and listening to them chat, it never ceased to amaze me that Ger seemed to know everyone in K-W and beyond.
When I was younger, fresh out of school and looking for work Gerry gave me a few hours per week in the office at Triangle Insulation. It was so kind of Ger to give me that paycheque to put in my pocket until I found permanent employment. I will always remember that.
I hadn’t seen Ger in the past year since his health declined but in a way I’m glad for that. In my mind he’ll forever be Ger, sitting on a lawn chair soaking his feet in the lake on a hot summer day while drinking a cold beer…..rest in peace Ger. You will be missed!
Our thoughts and prayers are with Shirley and all her family.

Dear Shirley and family:
We are so sorry to hear of Gerry's passing. Lots of great times to remember at Gillies Lake with all the gang! Dave and I would often see the Wildfangs and Henkels at the Tobermory car show for Chi-Cheemaun weekend. Gerry and Shirley were such good neighbours to Carl & Heather Nicholson at the lake. Gerry kept us all laughing for sure! We hope you can keep those wonderful memories with you, Shirley, and the entire family. Take care. Love, Cathy & Dave xoxox

My memories of Gerry always bring a smile to my face. The fun that the ball parents used to have, Gerry &Shirley, Dink & Nancy, Leo & Lorraine, Jack & Madge - what a group they were! Laughing and carrying on. I know Mom is hugging the crap out of Gerry right now. The two of them are banging the euchre table for sure.
Gerry influenced my life, as an athlete and as a young woman. His gentle way of telling me to "get it done Kimmer" gave me the encouragement to step on the ball diamond and give it all I had. He was a quiet coach, a simple pat on the back or look in the eyes and I knew what we has telling to me to do. I will never every forget Gerry, ever. A great man.
Shirley and family - my heart breaks for you. Please know that I am holding you all close during your time of sorrow. xxoo

I first met Gerry in 1942 when my family moved to Euclid Avenue in Waterloo.
We were next door neighbours and part of the Euclid Avenue gang.
While he was shorter and younger than me, I looked up to him.
I treasure the memories of ball hockey on the road, Saturday afternoon at Waterloo Arena and sleepovers at Gerry's house.
My sympathy to Shirley and the family.

I wanted to send a note about what I have been thinking the last few days regarding Gerry.
My first memories was him following the entire Wildfang family into church to sit in the front row. It was the only row that had enough seats for all of them.
As I got older, I got to know him better through our trips to Gillies Lake. He was often wearing a plaid coat and a hat emblazoned with an insulation supplier's logo, ready to move things around in the backyard of the cottage. I am not convinced progress was really made, but mornings were spent moving things around and talking to Carl. Days would end with some drinks and a fire and Gerry often "holding court" and telling jokes, repeating the "favourites" including the one about the rabbit and the bear.
What I came to realize recently was just how Gerry looked out for my Dad in the years following my mom's death. He convinced him to coach hockey, softball and other things to keep busy. It was something I will always be indebted to him for, even though I did not have the chance to ever tell him. It was a huge help to all of us, especially me.
I would also see Gerry at W-K Insulation and he was always interested in what I was doing and how things were going, especially with Janet Schooley, whom he knew from softball. He would often come in for a "couple of sticks of 3/4 inch" pipe insulation and sometimes would pick up rolls of R-Flex for certain jobs. Gerry was the one who heard that Russ Hammond had once called me Spike and the name was never forgotten, even when I saw him last in May.
The last few years I had enjoyed seeing Gerry on many of the trips I made back. He often asked about Sabrina and Aidan and knew that we had our challenges, but was always positive and our conversations always had a more than a few laughs.
I know the last few months have not been kind to him and I am glad I will have only memories of him in better days.
He was a good guy and I know all of us will miss him and that "faourite" joke about the rabbit and bear.
Love you guys,
Spike
