My condolences. Dr. Packull was one of my favourite professors, generous with his time and kind in his criticism. Above all, he was a great and memorable teacher. Whenever I bump into one of his former students, we always think of him fondly.

I am very saddened to hear this news; I have a very deep respect and a strong sense of gratitude to Prof. Packull. He introduced me to German history and I was both his undergraduate student and research assistant in 2005. He was a major mentor and guide to me (and many others). His encouragement was vital in my decision to go on to a PhD and now I teach a German History course and I think about him a lot and try to be as kind to my students as he was to me. He also showed me that you should love your work, but love your family even more and put those you love first. He was an amazing person. My deepest condolences to all of you.

I had the privilege of being Werner's PhD student for several years (1981 to 1987). Werner was much more than a supervisor; he was a mentor and friend. He encouraged, cajoled, corrected, and supported as a good and tough supervisor should. But he also shared his own life and thoughts with me, showing me that an academic is more than their scholarship, that it is important to be a good person as well. He supported me too as I searched for academic positions, helping me land the one that ended up being a career. And, he continued to help and advise me as I made the difficult transition from graduate student to professor.
When Werner retired some fifteen years ago, I wrote a piece summarizing his scholarly contributions, concluding with my own personal reflections. I would like to quote these here:
"During my time under his wing, I benefited immensely from Werner’s sage advice and patient mentoring. Not only could I count on his careful editing and critical commentary to clarify and tighten up my own work, but I was the beneficiary of an incredible sacrifice of time and energy as over the course of a year Werner devoted almost every Friday afternoon to wade through sources with me. He brought me to conferences, encouraged me to publish, and supported my academic development in many tangible ways. Such generosity of spirit is rare indeed."
As I draw close to my own retirement, I have become more convinced that Werner's generosity and selflessness were even more profound than I had indicated back in 2002. And on some levels he was also a father to this fatherless graduate student. I have little doubt that I would not be where I am now, teaching and supervising students and writing and publishing, were it not for his guidance and support.
Over the last number of years Werner’s medical condition meant that there were no more conversations, no more conferences together. I had already learned to miss him, but his passing has brought home to me just how much we his former students owe to him.
My deepest condolences to Karin, Christine and Reiny, and their families.
