It is with great sadness that I come to know that Bob LeRoy has left us. I met Bob in France in 1989 and I will never forget his story about the earring made with a nut. He was an example of kindness and good humor. The world becomes sadder at his departure.

Bob was like a father to me. I admired him so much and spoke extremely highly of him to my own parents. My father had heard so much about him, and on my graduation day when I introduced Bob to him, he got so nervous/excited that he dropped our camera. I'm glad though that he took this candid shot of us speaking after my graduation ceremony in June 2009. Those years with Bob were such good times.

Dear Virginia,
I was very sad to learn that Bob had passed away. I remember with fondness my time working for Bob when he was Director of the Guelph-Waterloo Centre. Bob was a kind and generous man with a wonderful sense of humor and it was a privilege to know him. My sincere condolences to you and your family for your loss.

Dear Virginia and family,
Bob had friends everywhere. Each year our research group at Queen’s University and several of my colleagues pile into a van (and sometimes two or three vans) to make our annual trek to the University of Waterloo where Bob and his colleagues would have organized another of the phenomenally successful Symposia for Chemical Physics. We go mostly, of course, for the science but also to catch up with Bob and everyone else at U. Waterloo. Through this symposium, and the associated social activities (including lunch at his house!) Bob has managed to build a community of physical chemists that have supported one another for several decades. This is a truly remarkable legacy, and one of the reasons why Bob will be missed so much by our community.

I first met Bob in 1974, the year I arrived in Canada. From that start, it was obvious that Bob was a class act. He was a clever, shrewd, tough, fair, and caring man, always positive, and always with a great sense of humour. Through common research interests, we developed an excellent friendship in recent decades, and he was always so generous with his time, and eager to provide fresh insights on any problem I discussed with him. And so it came as a terrible shock, and with much sadness, when I learned of his passing earlier this week. He was a giant among physical chemists, both at home and internationally, and he had a renowned talent for teaching us the essence of his research through his creative graphical presentations. I admired his courage in the face of many health challenges, I admired him as a scientist, and I admired his outgoing and engaging personality. He will be missed and remembered by so many of us for a long time to come, and I offer my heartfelt condolences to the family he left behind.

I was so saddened to learn of Bob’s death. My deepest condolences to his family in their loss.
Bob’s and my professional interactions go back to this month in 1971, when we corresponded over problems concerning the visible spectrum of I2, both of us then at the beginnings of our careers. Soon thereafter I met Bob at the annual spectroscopy symposium in Columbus, and we became lifelong colleagues and friends. The chance to catch up with him professionally and socially was always a high point for me of the Columbus meeting.
Bob was truly one of the world’s most positive and cheerful persons, and that in spite of his great physical travail in the last third of his life. His generosity was unlimited, and even his fiercest professional battles he recounted with a chuckle.
Bob was a great scientist whose career has ended too soon. I really miss him.

His generous hospitality at the annual Waterloo Chemical Physics Conferences will always be remembered. Apart from being a great scientist, more importantly, he was a great person. He will be missed.

Bob was a wonderful person, always cheerful despite the extremely difficult health issues he faced every day. He was a regular attendee at the spectroscopy symposium at Ohio State that Terry chaired for many years. Barbara got to know Bob when he attended our party during the symposium. On a couple of occasions he gifted Barbara with maple syrup from the LeRoy farm, a very special treat. The scientific community has lost a valued member, and personally we have lost a friend. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family. Terry and Barbara Miller

I was very saddened by the news of Bob's passing.
I first met Bob at a conference in Nova Scotia in 1985. What an enthusiastic man! Little did I know then of the role he would play in my development as a scientist. In 1990 he was the external examiner of my doctoral thesis and defense, and in 1994 I got the opportunity to work closely with him as a Research Associate in his group at the University of Waterloo. Together we developed a potential energy model that took into account long-range forces in diatomic molecules. Aside from our scientific collaboration, I remember Bob as a kind and caring individual, a positive and loving human being.
His positive attitude and passion for his work helped him fight ferociously his medical problems. He lived a winner, and died a winner, in every sense. My deepest condolences to all he leaves behind, and may God rest his beautiful soul in peace.

I'm very saddened to hear of Bob's passing and send my deepest condolences to his family. Bob was one of my mentors during my Master's at UW. It was a privilege to have written a paper with him and have him support me in my future endeavors. Although it was cold outside for a great deal of the year at UW, I have fond memories of the warmth and coziness of our theoretical chemistry wing - Bob's presence was a cornerstone of this experience as he was often the first person that you would see and greet, and be inspired by his continued enthusiasm for research.

My deepest condolences to the family. I had the chance to work with Bob the summer after my BSc and this was there start of a career-long connection. I appreciated his mentorship, friendship, and undying enthusiasm. He exemplified many of the benefits of being a scientist: the joys of discovery as well as the contribution to the community. There are many Grad House memories as well as from the many times he and Virginia welcome the merry band of scientists into their home at the end of Waterloo Chemical Physics Meeting. He will be missed.

It is indeed sad news to learn of Bob's passing, and I send my deepest condolences to Bob's family. I always looked forward to seeing him at the Columbus spectroscopy meetings and the Waterloo symposia. One of my favourite memories is from the picnic at the 50th Columbus meeting when Bob helped me serenade our colleagues as a member of the impromptu folk group "Ronnie Quantum and the Quarks." [We decided to christen him as the Strange Quark.] That was a lot of fun, as was walking with him to the sessions and enjoying his cheerful and insightful conversation. He was a real giant of the international spectroscopic community, and we will miss him greatly.

I am very sorry to hear this sad news.
During my first few months (and years) at Waterloo Chemistry, Bob's help and advice were invaluable to me - both in my efforts to learn teaching techniques and to navigate in the unfamiliar academic environment, which I encountered later in life than most.
I never met a person more dedicated to the University of Waterloo and more energetic in promoting good science teaching.
Outside the classroom, before he became ill, Bob was also a formidable squash opponent. He had a deadly lob shot that rolled high along the wall and dropped into the front corner. I don't think I ever returned one of those.
His courage in the face of extraordinary physical difficulties was a marvel to anyone who knew him. While we are sorry for the loss of a valued colleague, we cannot regret his release from the debilitating illnesses of his later years.
Those of us who are as old as (or in my case older than) Bob have long since understood for whom this bell tolls. His example is one that all of us should try to emulate.
